The American University in Cairo Director, Center of Peace, Democracy and Sustainable Development The American University in Cairo (AUC) seeks to fill the newly created position of Director of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Issa al Jaber Center for Peace, Democracy and Sustainable Development. The person selected for this position will report to the Provost and will be responsible for the creation, promotion and coordination of a new and innovative Center. This Center will be a University-based think tank that will foster research, host visiting scholars, organize and host conferences and symposia and produce publications relevant to the broad themes indicated in the title of the Center. The ability to work creatively and collegially with faculty in a variety of disciplines and with other academic administrators, including those already engaged in related programs, will be necessary. Candidates should be broadly knowledgeable about international relations, public affairs and development issues in the middle east. Prior experience in conducting and overseeing policy research programs and activities is also preferred. The Director will play a major role in shaping the Center’s research programs and outreach activities, working closely with an international advisory committee of experts. Founded in 1919, AUC’s campus is currently located in Cairo, Egypt, but will be moving to a new, state-of-the-art campus in New Cairo beginning Fall Semester, 2007 (see the New Campus website at www.aucegypt.edu/ncd/New%20Campus.html). The Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools accredits its degree programs. For more information see our website at www.aucegypt.edu. This is a three-year appointment subject to mutual agreement, to begin January 2006. Renewal of an appointment depends upon institutional needs and/or the appointee’s performance. For expatriates, benefits include housing, annual round-trip air travel for appointee and qualifying dependents, plus schooling for the equivalent of up to two children at Cairo American College.
