Since the job market is starting to take form we think it is time for a new rumors thread. And for an editor's note.
We've had to delete a large number of posts lately. We understand that it can be difficult to resist gossiping about candidates, particularly senior-level candidates, and departments, but we don't consider that appropriate activity for the IR Rumor Mill. We apologize to those who made reasoned arguments about the inappropriateness of the questions and discussions, but we deleted your posts to make it less likely for the conversation to continue. We may put up some of these comments in the IR Rumor Mill Discussion thread [note: as we have been doing as long as those comments are informational rather than speculative or dispariging].
We'll be a bit more tolerant of some of this kind of posting in the Job-market discussion thread, but even there we want to make sure the conversation "stays clean."
If you can't resist, there are plenty of outlets for this sort of nonsense (which, we believe, reflects very badly on our field): IR Discussions, American and Comparative Jobs 2, and so forth.
Feel free to discuss this policy in the IR Rumor Mill Discussion thread. But we won't change our minds.
We are, of course, interested in confirmation of the accuracy of the information we've posted in the tally sheet. The information we have is, at the least, incomplete.
We have reason to believe that some departments have responded to the various rumor mills by trying to better police information about their candidates and searches. We understand the rationale for such policies, but want to reiterate our stance: transparency -- within limits -- is in the best interests of the community. Interview information is already shared between faculty members and fellows at many institutions, and so the only people left in the dark are candidates (and prospective candidates) who lack access to these "information networks."

1) Can we get some sort of actual confirmation on the Georgetown Senior seach? We believe the information provided at 7:08 is likely true -- we have some corroboration -- but we don't have sufficient evidence to move the rumor to "confirmed."
2) We've been unsuccessful at getting much in the way of information on the other sub-"confirmed" rumors, e.g., Penn and Cornell. More information would be helpful. We particularly want to avoid posting incorrect information.

Couple of things:
1) Duke has used advertised "seminars" as job talks in at least one other case (last year), so Reiter's may fall into that category.
2) Pevehouse gave a talk last week at Penn, and it WAS a job talk.
As I understand it, Reiter's talk was arranged separately from job talks. That being said, any talk can be become a job talk.
Reiter definitely was scheduled to speak at Duke today. And if it went well, I bet he is under consideration, whether it was formally a job talk or not.

Does anyone know whether the long-short-list phone interviews for the IO/Int'l Law position at Lewis & Clark has resulted in a short-list for on-campus interviews?

So Penn is interviewing ABDs as well as established faculty like Pevehouse for the same job, or different jobs?
I strongly doubt that Penn is considering ABDs and newly minted PhDs alongside Jon Pevehouse and other established people. These are apples and oranges. Penn has enough money to hire both junior and senior people if they choose. They are not likely to be in direct competition with one another.
I know someone who has a campus interview at Lewis and Clark (IO/Law)
I'm betting the Pevehouse thing at Penn is a pre-established interest. He has a (good) history there, and has given general talks in the past at symposia, etc. And I concur that they can/are doing more than one search in IR under an "open" categorization.
Hope College (Michigan) is setting up phone interviews (first hand information).

I heard that Texas A&M is also interviewing Mohamet Bas from Rochester and Valentin Krustev from Rice. Source is a grad student from A&M.

CUIPS is a regular seminar series "Columbia University International Politics Seminar." None of these are searches, as interesting as it would be to debate hiring Bill Reed or Ned Lebow...

While there is the old adage "every talk is a job talk," most of those seminar series at elite R1s are used to ferret out possible future senior hires rather than actual job talks.

No, this is James Madison University, in Virginia/Metro DC. The "Muslim World" position is at Michigan State Univeristy's flagship in East Lansing.
WashU has an IR/IPE search but no job talks have been schedule yet (I know this first-hand). The information on this blog (the big board) is incorrect.
We've changed the designation to "disputed." Clarification of the linked-to conference would be helpful, which includes three scholars we believe are on the market this year.

Michael Horowitz may have an interview at UT-Austin. Heard from a friend of the candidate.
I thought that the UT-Austin job was for IPE/IO. Isn't Horowitz a Conflict/Security person?

We're getting terribly close to discussing personal characteristics of applicants. We've let these through in the hopes that someone will clarify the nature of the position or related issues, but consider this fair warning for everyone to be on their best behavior :-).

In general, I think one should not expect departments to strictly adhere to the language used in their ads. Good departments get better by going after the "best athlete available," whether or not he/she fits the precise descriptions in their ads. This is especially true for larger departments that have more flexibility and are likely to have a relatively steady stream of lines to fill.
I can think of at least three security scholars who were hired into major departments in searches that were advertised as IPE searches. After they've figured out who they want, the search committee will find someway to justify it in the context of the search they advertised (or often they won't even bother justifying since they don't really need to answer to anybody).
There was an earlier post about Hope College. Were they setting interviews on American or IR (or both). I ask because I have heard conflicting comments from what I believe to be credible sources.
I just find it a bit bizarre that a department would publicly advertise for a particular type of candidate and then pursue a different one. If we shouldn't expect schools to be looking for what they've advertised in a job announcement, what stops candidates from applying to every position? And why not announce a more general IR position if a school wants the "best athlete available"?

It may be bizarre, but so are lots of things in the academic job market. And there are people who apply for *every* job. Nothing is stopping you.
Larger and better departments certainly have preferences in what they are looking for (and they express that in the ads to ensure that those people apply), but if a jaw-dropper of a file comes in, then they're likely to consider that person regardless of specialization. I could name names of people who you'd be surprised to hear the line they were hired into, but I don't think that would be appropriate to this blog.
Exactly, 1:26. If a great file comes in, a department may want to take a look at that person regardless of the fit with the job description.
Does anybody know why the SLAC's are moving so SLOWLY? It has been close to a month for Holy Cross, Middlebury and Swarthmore... How is it that the biggies get their act together so much more quickly?
Smaller departments often have less wiggle room when choosing candidates. They have needs to cover, and may need to wait to generate enough applicants to choose the short list from. Also, many smaller departments tend to favor consensus (in the interest of peace) over majority votes...I've seen this hamstring departmental searches for more than 2-3 months.
And do we know for a fact that some of these SLAC haven't begun the interview process? Believe it or not, not all job market information makes it to this blog.
I'd hypothesize, in fact, that information about searches at SLAC is less likely to make it to this blog. Think about it:
-A SLAC may have ten faculty who know about interviews that have been scheduled. That's it. No graduate students.
-A major research university may have three dozen faculty members (or more) as well as scores of graduate students who are informed about interviews.
Obviously, information can come from the candidates as well, but there are simply fewer sources of "leaks" at small liberal arts colleges than at major research universities.
Middlebury has a short list.

Here is a question: Why doesn't the IR Rumor Mill itself contact the contact people on job ads and ask for an update in the name of the community? That way, no candidate can be seen as badgering the SC and the community would be better off. This would also address the issue of smaller schools whose people do not know about the Rumor Mill or have no graduate students to worry over placement.
We actually do this, particularly when we receive a rumor. We don't always get replies.

And how about a bureaucratic reason? A SLAC may have a department of 5 ot 6 members. They probably have an interdisciplinary committee. They may or may not have good secretarial and administrative support. And they may be teaching a full roster of classes!
And they still have to dig through the 2-300 folders.
