Anyone know when Smith Richardson will announce its World Politics and Statecraft fellows? They say no later than Jan 31 but I was wondering if winners heard sooner.
The call for applications for the 2009 Transatlantic Postdoctoral Fellowship in International Relations (TAPIR) is now available at http://www.swp-berlin.org/de/projekte/projekt.php?id=6422. The application deadline is February 16, 2009.
Nuffield College, Oxford has notified applicants who have made the 'long short-list.' There are 45 people in this category and last year there were 4 positions available. If you're on this list you have a 1/11 chance of actually getting a JRF.
The Woodrow Wilson School will soon be establishing a Center for International Security which will stand along side the existing Center for Globalization and Governance. The new security center will be a full-service entity, sponsoring research, conferences, fellows, etc. It will also host the Princeton-Harvard China and the World Program and other existing projects and programs. The Princeton Project on National Security will also be inside the center. And it will also have a post-doc program. They are currently securing formal funding authorization -- but Dean Anne-Marie Slaughter has indicated that they can begin advertising the post-doc positions.
The post-doc program will be open for applications this winter for the 2009-10 academic year. The parameters of the post-doc are wide-open; all facets of international security will be welcome to the program. Two post-docs will be available for this first year. The deadline for applications will probably be at the end of January.
Are a lot of people at Belfer and CISAC trying to renew their fellowships for next year, or will there be more room for people coming in for the first time?
someone more bored than me can figure out if a lot of the currently-funded Belfer fellows have jobs/were on market this year, and whether that means there will be relatively few renewal attempts for next year: http://belfercenter.ksg.harvard.edu/project/46/international_security.html?page_id=34
It seems like very few people at Belfer get *funding* (as opposed to allowed to maintain an affiliation) for a second year. Keep in mind that a number of the pre-docs at least are there on other organizations' money (USIP, foreign governments, etc.)
I was recently at a workshop in London in which Len Seabrooke from the Copenhagen Business School presented. Apparently he is now off to the University of Warwick to take up the post of Director of the Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation. I was told that he will be replaced by two Assistant Professors in IPE in the International Center for Business and Politics at the Copenhagen Business School. I know from a friend who is there that foreigners are given a special expert tax break and the post-tax salary is around $45,000 a year for three years. In a tough US job market this might be tempting for some. If you are interested I would contact Antje Vetterlein, who is an Assistant Prof there (av.cbp@cbs.dk). She is super sweet and smart, and I'm sure she will know what is going on if this may be of interest.
Did anyone find out about the Princeton security post-doc? Was it advertized anywhere? I contacted couple of people but they weren't sure what's happening, w/ Anne-Marie Slaughter having resigned as a Dean and taking up the position at State.
I know deadlines for application just passed, but when can we expect to hear from Mershon, Belfer, CISAC, Miller Center, and OCV? any veterans with experience with these?
Regarding the various programs/projects of the Belfer Center, especially the International Security Program, notification by late March is more likely for successful applicants.
I got a request from SSRC-IDRF for a transcript and letters of affiliation last week. I take this as a good sign, but am wondering if people know roughly how many people who end up receiving this request end up with fellowships.
I know of someone who received a rejection for the AAAS postdoc a few days ago. I still have not received any notification. Does anyone have information on the status of the search, whether successful applicants have been notified, and (on a related note) whether getting nothing at this point is something?
Has anyone heard anything about the AAAS Global Security Visiting Fellows Program? Applications were due in mid-October and decisions were supposed to be made by early March...just wondering if they held to this timeline.
Belfer told me they'd have their decisions in by the end of March. Apparently that was the case last year as well. However, last year I didn't receive my rejection e-mail until May 13! I hope that they will have the courtesy to send out their rejection notices earlier this year.
Last year, the Belfer Center told applicants that they would hear by March, implying that it would be early March (which was unrealistic). The Belfer Center did this without coordinating with or communicating what applicants were being told to the decision-makers of the assorted fellowship programs.
people have posted about rejection emails from ISP... has anyone received an acceptance email from ISP? Or heard of anyone who has been awarded a fellowship from ISP for the coming year?
Waiting to hear from AAUW. I had to accept a teaching fellowship in the meanwhile. Doubt I will get the aauw but if I do, I will be a jerk for backing out on the tf. Dunno why places don't understand that we are at the mercy of notification schedules.
Re: AAUW: last year, they said they would post the results online on April 15th, and they did. There were some glitches getting to the list at first, but it was corrected, and by the early afternoon, EST, it was up and visible. Alternates and rejected appplicants were notified shortly thereafter by mail. I'd assume they will do this again next Wed.
Re: Newton Fellowship, I contacted them last week and was told results would be available "late May at the earliest." For something that requires an international move by Sept 1 I can't believe they are going to make us wait this long (!!), but so it is.
If anyone else hears about Newton before late May I'd certainly appreciate you posting something here. Cheers.
I could barely believe it when I saw my name on the AAUW list. I am not in IR or eve Poli Sci but there aren't many humanities rumor blogs out there so I appreciate this space to commiserate with other people waiting to receive positive or negative word about their applications.
The Program on Terrorism and Insurgency Research at Wesleyan University seeks a pre or postdoctoral research associate. Working in collaboration with Erica Chenoweth at Wesleyan University, the successful candidate will help to develop and analyze data for a project comparing the tactics and outcomes of nonviolent and violent insurgencies. Responsibilities include: data collection and coding; managing undergraduate researchers; minimal grant writing duties; preparing briefs and reports when needed. In addition to an attractive benefit package, the position offers a small research account, opportunities for travel, considerable scheduling flexibility, and opportunities to publish original research related to the data. Advanced ABD or Ph.D. candidates with expressed interest in the study of conflict will receive special consideration. Successful candidates must have excellent proven methodological skills including database management and advanced statistics. The position is funded through a grant and begins February 1, 2010 with anticipated renewals through August 2014 dependent upon the availability of continued grant funding. Candidates are encouraged to commit to at least one full year of employment. Candidates should apply online at http://careers.wesleyan.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=51049. Under separate cover, please send 3 letters of recommendation to Prof. Erica Chenoweth, Government Department, 238 Church Street, Middletown, CT 06459, USA. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled, but applications received after May 25th, 2009 will not be considered.
Anyone here apply to Inter-American Foundation PhD Grassroots Development Fellowship? Not exactly an IR fellowship but figured I'd check if anyone has any news. I'm still waiting to be notified, good or bad
Last year I was an alternate for USIP and heard via email on 4/21. So I would expect this year to occur soon. Someone above, however, said the year before it was June. The website just says "spring" so it could be anytime in the next 6 weeks or so.
I got an acceptance via e-mail from USIP for the Peace Scholar fellowship Thursday. Said 10 of 177 proposals were chosen and acceptees must notify USIP by May 15th.
Still no word on the de Karman. In the application it states that final decisions will be made on or around April 15th. I hope notifications are sent soon to all applicants. (The website hasn't been updated either.)
I just saw on e-gap that my application has been processed (which I assumed meant read by an area reviewer) for a Newton International Fellowship as of May 5th. They haven't posted the decisions yet, but this is consistent with the previous post that final decisions wouldn't be available until late May.
I think that's probably not a good sign for those of us who have not heard yet...I am rather confused, however, since it appears that at least one of the two candidates in the Cambridge link are already at Cambridge. Doesn't that disqualify them?
I guess that doesn't bode well for those of us who haven't heard. I am rather confused, however, since I thought one of the eligibility requirements was that the researchers had to be outside of the UK at time of application...
Regarding the Newton - those two recipients featured from Cambridge are from the previous round - so don't assume yet that you haven't received it. This waiting is painful though!
Re: Newton, a painful wait indeed. But the results that were posted from Round 1 (see discussion above) indicate pretty clearly to me that they heavily favor hard science and engineering types--at least based on project titles--which is too bad for us. How competitive are belfer fellowships in the Intrastate Conflict Program? Most fellows seem to bring outside funding with them... Anyone know how many applications they usually receive?
Is the Intrastate Conflict program at Harvard's Belfer Center being shut down? They're not offering fellowships this year and aren't listed on the Center's list of programs/initiatives. Any info?

Hello! Few predoctoral fellowships this year...?
Anyone know when Smith Richardson will announce its World Politics and Statecraft fellows? They say no later than Jan 31 but I was wondering if winners heard sooner.
from my (limited) experience with SRF, they will let recipients know pretty close to the deadline (as in a week or two).

anyone heard from the Brookings Institute? they should be contact the candidates next Monday and I was wondering if someone heard about it...
Has anyone heard from EUI (Max Weber Fellowship)?
For what it's worth, yesterday I received a rejection letter from the National University of Singapore regarding their post-doc.
Brookings has suspended its fellowship program for 2009/2010 due to the "current uncertain economic environment."

The International Security Program is required to bring in new people each year.

Anyone applied for Newton International Fellowship in UK?
Got a rejection from SRF today.
Did it arrive by snail-mail?
Yes, it came by snail mail on Saturday.
any idea what kinds of projects/department/students/etc got SRF? good to know for framing next year's application. . ..
It seems as though there is a connection between having gone to SWAMOS and receiving an SRF.
based on the list they sent with acceptances, MIT and Harvard especially, plus Penn and Chicago, got a bunch. lots of civil war and security.
anyone heard from Notre Dame Kellogg Institute? Website says
awards made around Feb. 2.
I know deadlines for application just passed, but when can we expect to hear from Mershon, Belfer, CISAC, Miller Center, and OCV? any veterans with experience with these?
Belfer and CISAC should notify people in early to mid-March.

Has anyone heard anything from Niehaus at Princeton?
all NCGG offers have been made.
Any news about Stanford CISAC and Shorenstein Fellowships? Thanks.
With the CISAC fellowships, does anyone know what the success rate of professionals applying for the pre-doctoral positions are?
FYI last year CISAC finalists weren't notified until early/mid-March.
"All NCGG offers have been made."
Except for the Niehaus postdoc in regional political economy I assume. I thought that would be announced in March.
Are they notified via e-mail or phone?
email
Any news on the AAAS postdoc?
Has anyone heard whether invitations for interviews for the EUI PhD-Program have already been sent out? Thanks!
I know of someone who received a rejection for the AAAS postdoc a few days ago. I still have not received any notification. Does anyone have information on the status of the search, whether successful applicants have been notified, and (on a related note) whether getting nothing at this point is something?
Any info on when USIP tends to make announcements re the Peace Scholar Diss Program?
I recall getting my email (rejection) from USIP in mid to late June a few years back, so it could still be quite a wait.
Any news from CISAC post-doc?
Just received a rejection from the Miller Center.
Just received an email rejection from the Miller Center of Public Affairs fellowship (University of Virginia)
Well, at least they're prompt (says a fellow Miller rejectee).
That was fast. I hear 8 or 9 accepted, with 6 alternates. Anyone know the exact number of offers?
First round Joint International Security Program/Intrastate Conflict Program Fellowship offers have just out.
Any news about the Browne Center Postdoc at UPenn?
Received rejection letter from CISAC (for Postdoc) yesterday thru snail mail.
Any news from the Browne Center Postdoc at UPenn?
Any news about the PHCWP Fellowship? Thanks.
Anyone heard from AAUW or Spencer?
Still no news from CISAC?
Still no news from CISAC?
Hi,
Anyone got anwser from PHCWP Fellowship? why so late? anyone knows the reason?
CISAC pre-doctoral fellowship rejections are in the mail....
Just received a rejection from ACLS Mellon.
Has anyone heard anything about the AAAS Global Security Visiting Fellows Program? Applications were due in mid-October and decisions were supposed to be made by early March...just wondering if they held to this timeline.
Has anyone heard from Belfer ISP? Do they notify via email or snail mail?
ISP notifies via email.
Has anyone heard anything from Belfer or the Belfer RIIA fellowship program yet?
Hello!
Noboday has received anything from Belfer center or PHCWP? They really would like to give us an answer by March 31?
Finally, I have received a rejection from PHCWP.
Belfer told me they'd have their decisions in by the end of March. Apparently that was the case last year as well. However, last year I didn't receive my rejection e-mail until May 13! I hope that they will have the courtesy to send out their rejection notices earlier this year.

anyone hear anything from OCV at Yale?
Just receive Belfer ISP rejection via email.
any news on USC CIS post-docs?
people have posted about rejection emails from ISP... has anyone received an acceptance email from ISP? Or heard of anyone who has been awarded a fellowship from ISP for the coming year?
ISP and ISP/MTA offers have not been announced.

About the rejection letter from PHCWP, e-mail or snail mail?
About a rejection from PHCWP, it's by email finally.
Any word from ISP? I was told they'd announce by the end of March.
I know of one person who just received a non-stipendiary fellowship with the ISP/MTA program.
All ISP offers have just gone out.
What's up with the non-stipendiary offers? Is that a normal Belfer thing?
AAAS fellowship? Anyone?
All ISP/MTA offers have gone out.
Could someone please speak out about CISAC? It is strange that there is still no update on this one.
Acceptance from BCSIA March 31 via email, rejection from CISAC early by snail mail.
Anybody has more information about the fellowship offer now? It's so late for 2009 - 2010? Thanks!
First round CISAC offers are out. First round ISP offers are out.
I said the new fellowship offers, anyone knows?
n will AAUW declare their results!!
waiting with bated breath!!!!
If anyone knows the exact date pls post it!!!
Anyone hear anything from Mershon yet?

I got an award notification from SSRC IDRF about 5 days ago, but I don't know if they've notified all recipients yet.
Has anyone heard about the AAAS Visiting Scholar's Program (Global Security)? They were to have sent notifications by early March.
AAUW list is up:
http://www.aauw.org/education/fga/fellowships_grants/upload/2009-10_FellGrantsListingForWebsite.pdf
If that doesn't work, just go to the main site, follow links on list.
Congrats to the winners (hope some are here)!
Wow! I'm on the AAUW list! also heard back from Sigma Xi today that I received a grant.
has anyone heard regarding the de karman fellowship?
I could barely believe it when I saw my name on the AAUW list. I am not in IR or eve Poli Sci but there aren't many humanities rumor blogs out there so I appreciate this space to commiserate with other people waiting to receive positive or negative word about their applications.

Still no word on the Mershon for anyone? This seems rather late, but I know they have notified this last in the past, too.
Anything yet on AAAS 3/24, 3/31, or 4/13 posters? I still haven't heard...
Anyone here apply to Inter-American Foundation PhD Grassroots Development Fellowship? Not exactly an IR fellowship but figured I'd check if anyone has any news. I'm still waiting to be notified, good or bad

My friend has a phone interview for the AAAS postdoc next week.
offers from Dubai Initiative (Belfer) have gone out.
I got an acceptance via e-mail from USIP for the Peace Scholar fellowship Thursday. Said 10 of 177 proposals were chosen and acceptees must notify USIP by May 15th.
Hmm--so what's still outstanding, then? Mershon and what else?
Someone mentioned the de Karman Fellowship a few weeks ago. Have you heard yet? I'm still waiting...
I heard Mershon decisions were recently made.
Still no word on the de Karman. In the application it states that final decisions will be made on or around April 15th. I hope notifications are sent soon to all applicants. (The website hasn't been updated either.)
Thanks, poster re: Mershon. Would you mind saying if someone you knew received an offer?
Does anyone know if Harvard's Dept. of Government College Fellows program has made offers?
so... if i have not heard from USIP, does it mean that I am most likely on the wait list or rejected?
de karman fellowship awardees announced on website as of today.
Has anyone heard anything about the Newton Fellowships yet?
I just saw on e-gap that my application has been processed (which I assumed meant read by an area reviewer) for a Newton International Fellowship as of May 5th. They haven't posted the decisions yet, but this is consistent with the previous post that final decisions wouldn't be available until late May.
About Newton Fellowship. Was it written exactly "processed" or "assessed"? My application was "assessed" yet on March 31.
And no news until now.
I think some of the Newton fellowships are being announced. Check http://www.cambridgenetwork.co.uk/news/article/default.aspx?objid=59298
I noticed two researchers from Cambridge Engineering were awarded a NIF on May 11th. Do they award all at the same time, or over a period of time?
On the page
http://www.cambridgenetwork.co.uk/news/article/default.aspx?objid=59298
the fellows who applied for the previous round
See
http://www.newtonfellowships.org/PDFs/2008NIF.pdf
Hopefully we'll find out pretty soon. I was told by the director that we will be notified via email.
Only 50 grants for hard sciences, social sciences and humanities mean slim chances overall!
Do we know who got the nod for Belfer Fellowships in the Intrastate Conflict program for 2009-2010?
Found out today I didn't receive the Newton...
I received an e-mail today from NIF. Unsuccessful. The same word was int he GAP account.
I received an e-mail today from NIF. Unsuccessful. The same word was int he GAP account.
I also got the NIF rejection email on May 27.
The Intrastate Conflict Program doesn't offer any fellowships on its own. All its appointments are joint with the International Security Program. The joint fellows for 2009-2010 are Patrick Johnston, Yvonne Malan, Jennifer Keister, and Anoop Sarbahi.
Quick question for those applying to the Belfer fellowships: Citations or no citations? If the former, a list of references or no?
I didn't use citations for my Belfer app; I don't think it's necessary.
Assuming a dissertation prospectus is still required, citations seem like a no-brainer, no? This is academia, after all...a list of references seems unnecessary unless requested.
They don't require a prospectus for the application. Only a 3-5 page statement of proposed or already executed research. I'm guessing citations are the way to go...
why are people even working on belfer applications? it's not due until January 15th. Why work on it in October?
Because any decent proposal goes through five or six heavy revisions spread out over several months.
Does anyone know how much the IDRF awards are? I've looked through the SSRC website but can't seem to find specifics. Any ideas out there?
How competitive are belfer fellowships in the Intrastate Conflict Program? Most fellows seem to bring outside funding with them... Anyone know how many applications they usually receive?
SSRC is 20,000$
For SSRC IDRF (2009-2010) specific conversations, also check out the conversation here:

Is the Intrastate Conflict program at Harvard's Belfer Center being shut down? They're not offering fellowships this year and aren't listed on the Center's list of programs/initiatives. Any info?
Has anybody else received a request for transcript from IDRF? Is this a good sign or just part of the application procedure?
Any CISAC news?
