Preseason Thread
Pretty much what it sounds like: a place for discussions of the 2009-2010 market, strategies for getting a job, strategies for coping with the process, etc. etc.

Some faculty will get an 8% cut (not "nearly 10%"...)
Check eJobs, or the "Jobs Board" on this very site for a number of China/IR listings. http://irrumormill.blogspot.com/2007/05/2009-2010-jobs-board.html
Not my field, but there appear to be several position (research fellowships and senior hire opportunities) with the Griffith Asia Institute (Griffith University) in Brisbane Australia. Good luck.
McGill is looking for a China person who does both Comp and IR, so if you are mostly IR but can do a course or two on China domestic politics, that would be fine.
What's the consensus on applying for jobs that list an area of expertise outside your area of expertise? Should a security studies person bother applying for an IR/China or an IR/IPE job?
Is the deadline of application firm? May I send out application three or four days later. One of my adviser is doing his field work in the middle of nowhere. I am able to contact him now until he is back from Africa.
Re 7:54, odds aren't good, obviously, but given that applying is cheap it can't hurt (although I'd think that it would be good to signal that you recognize that you're outside the immediate area of interest for the search and explain why you're applying anyway, especially if there are strong geographic or other reasons). I know of at least one person at a top-tier IR program who submitted a security application to an IPE search and got interviewed and hired anyway.

FAIL
anyone know which schools will be posting IR ads in future?
Sooo.... any peeps out there?
any word from the LBJ School at UTexas yet?
There are jobs at Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Chicago, Notre Dame, and other places. Not a terrible year at all.
Re: LBJ
The committee hopes to whittle-down the huge number of applications down to a long-short list before APSA.
thanks for the LBJ information
Anyone looking for China IR people this year?

I'm a security person at a top tier school who was hired in an IPE search, so either...
a) "hey, that was me!"
or
b) we now have a second existence proof.
Either way, if you want a job, apply for it. Let them sort out the rest.
Shouldn't we move to a "season started" thread?
someone on PSJR says that the LBJ School is making calls - is that true for the IR positions?
Our information is that:
1) Yes, the LBJ school is making phone calls;
2) The process is far from over, so don't think that not getting a call means you're out of the running.
See the big board for the same info.
