Have you guys seen the melee of Americanist backbiting over the Stony Brook position over on PSJR? That is exactly the kind of stuff that would not happen over here in IR, due mostly to the tighter moderation. Hopefully when info starts becoming available on IR positions, we can keep it civil and informative over here.
I spoke with Yale faculty member yesterday. Dean told the PS department that all their searches were canceled for 08/09 except for one. A South Asia search, I think.
LBJ School is likely to be looking at economists, former policy-makers, and historians for those slots. But hold out hope I guess until all calls are made.
ALERT: Senate Considers Cutting Political Science from NSF Sen. Coburn to Introduce Amendment to Cut Political Science from SBE (October 7, 2009)
APSA has just learned that Sen. Coburn (R-OK) has proposed an amendment to eliminate NSF’s political science program. It is an amendment to the Senate Commerce, Justice, Science appropriations bill, which is currently on the Senate floor today.
Republican Senator Tom Coburn (Oklahoma) brought forward the amendment to the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2010 (H.R. 2847), which is currently on the Senate floor.
APSA encourages political scientists to contact their Senator’s office TODAY to ask them to vote against Coburn’s amendment to eliminate the political science program from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Background on the amendment, which may help you craft a response: http://coburn.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=RightNow.Home&ContentRecord_id=3036838b-802a-23ad-469e-3fcfb490ec11)
Come on, IR folks! Please don't post here every time a rumor is posted on Political Science Job Rumors, as nothing there is substantiated. If anything, real information should start here and trickle-in over there!
Staniland looks more like a comparative/IR candidate than straight IR. PSJR says they are looking in comparative, comparative/IR, and in IR separately. Any info on this?
It looks to me like GW has a junior search, a senior search (university prof) and one potentially mixed search. So I would think the answer to your question is "yes."
GW began reviewing applications on November 2. Doesn't it seem a bit early for them to already have made calls by 11:58 am on November 2? I mean, I know academic institutions are known for their blindingly fast administrative turnaround, but still...
Two questions: GWU- are the calls for the general IR search chaired by Finnemore (and/or one of the two security joint appointments with Elliot)? Pitzer- are the calls going out to sr. scholars and are they only going to IPE folks?
I don't have inside info on GW, but given that the closing date for the security positions that are joint with Elliot was 11/2, I think it is reasonable to expect that the calls are for the junior position that is solely in the PS Dept (chaired by Finnemore).
Please see the announcement below for a recently authorized tenure track position in peace and conflict studies. I am chairing the search committee. I am happy to answer any questions about the position. I will also be at the Peace Sciences Society meeting in Chapel Hill later this month, and could meet with anyone interested in more information. Feel free to email me at jwalsh@uncc.edu if you want to set up a brief meeting.

Not sure if this was posted yet but Long Island University- Brooklyn has pulled their search for budgetary reasons. I received two identical letters letting me know. Why two? I have no idea.
We're a tad behind on keeping the Big Board updated. Hope to get caught up on that later this week. Also still waiting for some confirmation e-mails; if you get an e-mail from us asking you to confirm some information, please do reply.

Assistant Professor (equivalent) position at University College London in International Public Policy/International Relations: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/spp/spp-news-important/031109
UBC (IR Sec) sent some emails saying a short list was made and some people (the email recipients) were close but no cigar--though they will keep them in mind if all else falls through apparently. So, I guess "calls are out" to quote the PSJR inanity.
NWC tends to operate a bit more informally in terms of their hiring processes, scheduling job talks on more of a rolling basis as applications come in. Confirmed they are definitely scheduling job talks.
Has anyone heard anything about Lewis & Clark lately? It was reported that they were making calls back in October but seem to have gone dark since then...
The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor whose major research interest is the EU as a global actor. Possible areas of specialization may include energy security, trade, economic governance, EU foreign and security policy, or the EU’s international role in negotiations related to research, development, procurement, or transfer of technology. The ideal candidate would also be able to develop new courses in EU external affairs, diplomacy, and transatlantic relations as well as contribute to the mission of the European Union Center of Excellence at Georgia Tech. Applicants should show promise or evidence of outstanding scholarly achievement. The Sam Nunn School is multidisciplinary and has growing undergraduate, graduate, and overseas programs, including joint undergraduate degrees with Modern Languages and Economics. Materials should be sent to: Chair of EU Specialist Search Committee, The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, Georgia Institute of Technology, 781 Marietta Street NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30318. Position is subject to budgetary developments.
Georgia Tech is serious about wanting a European Union specialist and *not* a specialist in Europe. That is, they want someone whose research focuses on the EU as an institution. They do not seek a specialist in the politics of a particular European country/countries.
Dustin Tingley update. He has received an offer from William and Mary, but Harvard chose not to make him an offer. He is interviewing at Texas A & M this week.
It looks like UChicago has finished interviewing. Any offers made yet? Who is Milan Babik, by the way? Plenty of info floating around on their other candidates (Staniland, Grynaviski, Poast), but not him.
Naval War College has filled one of its two positions (the "Security - Strategy" one) and done several interviews for the other (the "Leadership" one).
Previous commenter was correct, btw, NWC and some other DoD institutions do apps on a rolling basis; applicants should get files in as soon after ads are posted as possible.
Previous is partially correct. Only some departments at NWC and other DoD institutions do rolling applications. It depends. To be certain contact specific department. I'm a Dept. chair.
The PoliSci Job Rumor blog says that the Kansas job is not closed but having funding difficulties. The university will have to pick up the funding that the Army dropped. Any real info on this? Thanks!

Anyone have any info on the College of Charleston IR search? There is not much mention of it at PSJR and most is on one of their other searches. I didn't find anything on the job board here either (it's not listed).

Poli Sci Job Rumors has returned to a free for all format...there are new posts suggesting that UMass, Dartmouth and Bridgewater State have made calls.
@4:10. I can neither confirm or deny, but since psjr opened the door to all the trolls and ninnies it would seem wise to take anything posted there with a grain (or bucket) of salt. Apparently calls are out for all the jobs left unfilled so far as well half of those that are likely to be posted next season. Good luck finding reliable info now.
Since the ad for the Global Studies senior position at the McCormack Grad School of Policy Studies at UMass, Boston is no longer anywhere to be found I suppose I can cross them off my list. Does anyone know anything they can share on this position?

Any word on the University of Georgia's Intl Affairs position? Was it pulled for budget reasons? That appears to be the case over at PSJR but one never knows with those cats.

Anyone making calls yet?
Stony Brook made calls for the Political Economy position
anyone with a 9/15 deadline have a sense of when they'll start making calls?
Lewis & Clark closed -- anyone with any insight yet?
Have you guys seen the melee of Americanist backbiting over the Stony Brook position over on PSJR? That is exactly the kind of stuff that would not happen over here in IR, due mostly to the tighter moderation. Hopefully when info starts becoming available on IR positions, we can keep it civil and informative over here.
Anyone know what's going on with Yale's omnibus search? Are they seriously looking for someone, or is the search dead in the water?
@ 7:53 -- and that, as you note, is precisely why we moderate comments.
I have heard that there are no IR/PS folks on the shortlist for the LBJ positions listed over the summer.
@7:53: God I hope so...sort of depressing to visit the PSJR site. Mostly just cranks it seems. I hope it stays more pleasant (and informative) here.
5:24 am should be 09/10, rather than 08/09 re canceled Yale searches.
People talking about LBJ are misinformed. Political scientists have already interviewed and more will be.
We can confirm 8:12am.
To second the Yale comment, all searches but the South Asia one have been cancelled. Source: member of the now-defunct search committee there.
Say, defunct Yale search-committee member: just out of curiosity, how many applications did you get?
Any information out there on Chicago's open search?
What's up with Harvard's search? Any idea what they want or if they are targeting someone?

Sen.

There seems to be very little action here. What's going on?
Is Yale still accepting application for its South Asia position??
Poli Sc Job Rumors reports South Carolina has made calls.
It also reports that they haven't.
Come on, IR folks! Please don't post here every time a rumor is posted on Political Science Job Rumors, as nothing there is substantiated. If anything, real information should start here and trickle-in over there!
It seems clear that there is no information yet. Departments have not made calls. Hopefully they will soon.
LBJ school is bringing in at least one polisci ABD focused on security/civil war.
Dartmouth has started making calls.
South Carolina is interviewing:
-Amanda Licht (Iowa)
-Conrad (FSU)
Harvard has apparently made some decisions -- and potentially calls -- for its junior IR job.
Harvard has made decisions about who to call.
It seems that American University is inviting people for interviews for its transnational crime and terrorism position.
What type of people is Dartmouth calling? Security? IPE? Qualitative? Quantitative?
Lewis and Clark is making calls.

Max Abrahms is interviewing at Dartmouth and American.

The job talk listed on Chicago's website is in comparative politics, not IR. Is there other information suggesting Chicago made IR calls?
That info on ND is wrong.
Who has Princeton called?
ND's short-list isn't Tingley, Kedizora, or Abrhams. I heard it's Brooks, Kreps, and probably Chowdhury
Vermont has made calls
Brooks, Kreps, and Chowdhury is correct.
What ever happened to RIT's IR position? Did they ever make calls? What were they really looking for?
That ND list is not correct.
No decision has been made and no calls have been made for Notre Dame.
Is Dartmouth inviting more than one candidate?
Brooks, Kreps, and Chowdhury is incorrect. Notre Dame has not made calls. Source: Notre Dame faculty member.
Medina (WUStl) is interviewing at Vermont
PSJR says Stanland has an IR/Comparative talk at Chicago - does that mean IR calls have been made there?
The Staniland interview at Chicago is likely an IR interview given that he is an IR scholar from MIT.
Staniland looks more like a comparative/IR candidate than straight IR. PSJR says they are looking in comparative, comparative/IR, and in IR separately. Any info on this?
Harvard has made calls
Confirmation on this?
Is this confirmed?
Has GW decided whether it is hiring at the junior or senior level for its security slot?
It looks to me like GW has a junior search, a senior search (university prof) and one potentially mixed search. So I would think the answer to your question is "yes."
Harvard has made calls. Source: grad student at Harvard.
George Washington has made calls to some junior candidates. Source: friend of a candidate.
Confirm that William & Mary has invited out at least two candidates.
UNC-Chapel Hill has made calls regarding the 3 year position in International and Area Studies.
Pitzer starting to make calls
GW began reviewing applications on November 2. Doesn't it seem a bit early for them to already have made calls by 11:58 am on November 2? I mean, I know academic institutions are known for their blindingly fast administrative turnaround, but still...
Two questions:
GWU- are the calls for the general IR search chaired by Finnemore (and/or one of the two security joint appointments with Elliot)?
Pitzer- are the calls going out to sr. scholars and are they only going to IPE folks?
I don't have inside info on GW, but given that the closing date for the security positions that are joint with Elliot was 11/2, I think it is reasonable to expect that the calls are for the junior position that is solely in the PS Dept (chaired by Finnemore).
Don't know who the invitees are.
I know of one GW call, and it was for the general IR line.
UC Merced is making calls starting 11/5. Source = colleague @ Merced.
Hunter has scheduled interviews. I don't know who the candidates are.
is the Big Board no longer being updated?
Please see the announcement below for a recently authorized tenure track position in peace and conflict studies. I am chairing the search committee. I am happy to answer any questions about the position. I will also be at the Peace Sciences Society meeting in Chapel Hill later this month, and could meet with anyone interested in more information. Feel free to email me at jwalsh@uncc.edu if you want to set up a brief meeting.

Naval War College has scheduled interviews.
In the absence of a specific fellowship thread at the moment: the 2010 Call for Applications for the Transatlantic Postdoctoral Fellowship for International Relations and Security (TAPIR) program is now available. More information is available at http://www.rand.org/about/edu_op/fellowships/transatlantic/ or http://www.swp-berlin.org/de/projekte/projekt.php?id=6422.
Can anyone confirm the comment about Naval War College? Is this for their national security and decision-making position?
I was curious because their application deadline was 11/30 so it seemed a bit early to have scheduled interviews?

UBC (IR Sec) sent some emails saying a short list was made and some people (the email recipients) were close but no cigar--though they will keep them in mind if all else falls through apparently. So, I guess "calls are out" to quote the PSJR inanity.
Any offers made from South Carolina?
there are definitely interviews scheduled for the GW junior National and International Policy search.
Anyone hear anything re: the University of Toronto open positions?
Coastal Carolina has scheduled interviews for the IR/Africa position
Notre Dame rejection letters have been posted - I got mine today.
Why is the big board not being updated?
NWC tends to operate a bit more informally in terms of their hiring processes, scheduling job talks on more of a rolling basis as applications come in. Confirmed they are definitely scheduling job talks.
Big board newly updated. We'll try to be better about that in the future.
FWIW, PSJR is reporting that Camber Warren and Mariana Medina have been called for the Stanford job.

Both of those names are wrong. The Wash U candidate is Hong-min Park.
any news on Kansas? their closing date was Nov 1.
It seems that Trinity College, Dublin has shortlisted candidates for their five year position. Any information on who has been shortlisted?
Park is interviewing at Stanford for the American position. I don't think the names for the IR position are correct.

Trinity invites: Bhavnani (Stanford), Weymouth (UCSD), Min (UCLA)
I have heard that interviews have begun at Boston U for the European security position. Any info on the candidates?

Thanks for the info on the GWU searches.
Any word on whether the senior invitation(s) for the PS Dept. / Elliot School job have been made or when they will be?
Knowledgeable GW/Elliott person: any word about the environmental policy/sustainable development job?
Has anyone heard anything about Lewis & Clark lately? It was reported that they were making calls back in October but seem to have gone dark since then...
Lewis and Clark definitely is in the interviewing phase; a colleague of mine has already had a campus visit.
EU Specialist @ Georgia Tech
The School’s programs focus on understanding the global context of advances in science and technology. The Sam Nunn School has 21 faculty members; more than 400 undergraduate majors and 75 Master’s degree students; and a newly launched selective Ph.D. program in International Affairs, Science, and Technology. To receive full consideration, application materials should be received by February 1, 2010 and should include a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and examples of scholarly work. Applicants should also send a graduate transcript and three current letters of recommendation. Materials should be sent to: Chair of EU Specialist Search Committee, The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, Georgia Institute of Technology, 781 Marietta Street NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30318. Position is subject to budgetary developments.
Important follow-up--
Georgia Tech is serious about wanting a European Union specialist and *not* a specialist in Europe. That is, they want someone whose research focuses on the EU as an institution. They do not seek a specialist in the politics of a particular European country/countries.
Did Greenhill accept the S. Carolina offer?

I heard Greenhill also has offer at Oregon.
Have calls been made on the Kansas job?

Hmmm... Then can I assume that if I haven't received a rejection letter I must have gotten the job? Cool! I always wanted to move to Boston!!!
Dustin Tingley update. He has received an offer from William and Mary, but Harvard chose not to make him an offer. He is interviewing at Texas A & M this week.
Above...Siegel info. must be incorrect. Didn't he receive a counter to stay at FSU?
It looks like UChicago has finished interviewing. Any offers made yet? Who is Milan Babik, by the way? Plenty of info floating around on their other candidates (Staniland, Grynaviski, Poast), but not him.
Re Tingley and Harvard. The Department did choose to make him an offer. They asked Dean for two positions. Dean told them no.
Who got the #1 offer at Harvard?
no offer to be made for the GWU Middle East job.
I hear the University of St. Gallen has been making calls - anybody know anything?
7:38 - what does that mean? are they cancelling the search?
Heard in Cambridge: Horowitz got the Harvard offer. Staniland got the GW, U of Chicago, and UT/Austin offers.
Cambridge rumor about Horowitz is correct. Source: Harvard Government department people in the know.
I'm a Dept. chair.
What happened to the Stanford search? Did they interview/hire anyone?
i've heard Stanford canceled its IR search but who knows.

The College of Charleston position is for a Comparativist with an area focus on Africa--not an IR position.
The Charleston job is a bit of both, to be honest. So I think it's fair to discuss it here.

Poli Sci Job Rumors has returned to a free for all format...there are new posts suggesting that UMass, Dartmouth and Bridgewater State have made calls.
Can anyone here confirm this?
Any good rumours/info that came from some backroom chatter at ISA? There are, I believe, a few jobs still open.
What happened to the senior security slot at GW?
Since the ad for the Global Studies senior position at the McCormack Grad School of Policy Studies at UMass, Boston is no longer anywhere to be found I suppose I can cross them off my list. Does anyone know anything they can share on this position?
At ISA I overheard someone saying he has an interview for the Georgia Tech Nunn school position.

Any word on the University of Georgia's Intl Affairs position? Was it pulled for budget reasons? That appears to be the case over at PSJR but one never knows with those cats.
What's the word on the New School position in critical something or other? Someone is posting on PSJR that some rejection letters were sent out but as usual the thread degenerated into how much people don't like the New School...
any news on the Georgia Tech EU specialist position?

Georgia Tech has a shortlist for the EU position, and is waiting for approval from the provost to invite candidates.
NYU-AD calls?
Hmmm..Yale just posted for TT. Awfully late in the season. Any insights?
NYU AD made some calls- not sure if they offered a position to someone yet.
I also hear Ga. Tech has a shortlist for the EU job, but the likelihood of the line getting pulled for budgetary reasons is very, very high.
any further news on the Georgia Tech EU position? are they proceeding with it or pulling it?
So far the provost at Georgia Tech is allowing the EU search to proceed. The first candidate is interviewing April 1. Georgia Tech has made an offer in the security search.
Who got the G-Tech offer?
SUNY Oneonta is scheduling phone interviews.
Any news on what finally happened with the EU position at Georgia Tech?
Has SUNY Oneonta finalized its search?
I heard they didn't decide to hire and will advertise again next year.
Good news... if the position isn't pulled next year. Georgia is going through a very rough time.
Georgia Tech decided not to make an offer for the EU position this year, and (given that funding has firmed up) will search again in the fall.
Good luck to all of us next year.
