We have received an uncorroborated rumor that Georgetown (Security Studies) has invited candidates for interviews.

Anonymous said...

Is this true? Any idea who?

Anonymous said...

From American and Comparative Jobs:

"Lewis and Clark has a 'long-short list.'"

I'm not sure how useful that information is....

Anonymous said...

What's a long-short list? 50 people?

Anonymous said...

Columbia's general IR search may have had a specific target in mind.

Anonymous said...

Lewis and Clark has been pushing people hard to get in their final materials: rec letters and transcripts. Even asking for fax or fedex. Must be close to a list by now!

Anonymous said...

I have some info from Columbia and have not heard that there is a target mentioned. I could be wrong but my sources have not mentioned anyone specific.

Anonymous said...

One lesson from the last run with this: if you have a rumor, please specify the reliability/closeness of the source. I.e., from best (member of a committee) to worst (third hand information from a friend of a cousin of a candidate). No names are needed, of course, just a little more specificity.

Re: 9:58. Remember that professors and students can also contact us via email.

This is a good way for us to assess the credibility of a rumor while maintaining the anonymity of the source.

(We promise to keep such emails in strictest confidence; we will even delete them if the source requests us to do so.)

Any rumors about where American is in their search?

Anonymous said...

Texas A&M has started inviting people for their security position.

Anonymous said...

is the TAMU security position in political science or the Bush School?

Anonymous said...

Can you give some idea of the source "area" for the A&M rumor? Like a boyfriend's cousin's best friend who apparently got a call versus a discussion with a committee member.

Anonymous said...

Re A&M, I know a person who has been scheduled to interview soon--one degree of separation, I guess.

Anonymous said...

A&M is already interviewing? Their (Bush School) ad says that "review of appliations will BEGIN on October 16". True, earlier is better, but seems to kinda screw people who figured getting a file in two weeks before the requested date was good enough.

Makes more sense if it's PoliSci which had a 9/15 date for a general IR job, but "international security" was the Bush school job.

Anonymous said...

Any idea on what SUNY Buffalo is looking for in IR? They have an open position listed. Are they targeting assistant, associate or full?

Anonymous said...

I've heard nothing about American, other than they had a particularly large number of applications.

Anonymous said...

If you know the person at A&M, can you confirm if it is the political science department or the Bush School?

Anonymous said...

Any update on A&M?

Anonymous said...

Who is being interviewed at Georgetown (Security) and TAMU?

Anonymous said...

Anyone know what Stanford is looking for?

Anonymous said...

somene senior

Anonymous said...

Can we get a definition of "possible," "likely," etc.? Does it mean that interviews are possible, or that the quality of the rumor is a possibility, or....?

IR Rumor Mill said...

The adjectives refer to our assessment of the accuracy of the information. See the bullet points under the chart.

Anonymous said...

stanford is searching?

Anonymous said...

I HEARD THAT LEWIS AND CLARK IS CONDUCTING PHONE INTERVIEWS.

Anonymous said...

I've heard from MIT grad students that they may be also looking at the senior level, with a focus on civil and ethnic conflict. Don't know if that's true or not, though. . .

Anonymous said...

pr(grad student information about hiring is correct) = ~ .4

Anonymous said...

can you put affiliation beside the job talks candidates, and maybe even their full names.

Anonymous said...

Vanda Felbab-Brown is a Ph.D candidate at MIT, Mike Horowitz is a Harvard Ph.D doing a post-doc at Belfer, and Seth Jones is a Chicago Ph.D now at RAND. Don't know about Kagan.

Anonymous said...

Can we be a bit more specific here? Which job are we talking about?

Anonymous said...

Those interviews are for the jr job in the Security Studies Program, which is part of Georgetown's School of Foreign Service. The Security Studies Program is also searching at the senior level, which are the other "likely" interviews.

The Georgetown government department is conducting a separate search for a jr ir/security person. Those interviews have not leaked (yet).

Kim Kagan is a jr military historian with a PhD from Yale.

IR Rumor Mill said...

8:11. If we get consistent information about people's affiliation, we'll list them. But don't presume that we (1) get such information and (2) have the inclination and/or ability to track down more comprehensive information about names.

Full names? Frankly, we chose to list first initials for aesthetic reasons having to do with the size of the table. If there's much demand, we can look into changing that.

Thanks to 10:26 for providing full information.

While we're at it, can anyone confirm the rumors we've listed as "unconfirmed"?

Anonymous said...

I can confirm that TAMU has extended at least one interview offer to a candidate from Iowa, though I don't who that person is.

Anonymous said...

Is it Kim Kagan, or Korina Kagan (PhD, Hebrew University of Jerusalem)?

Anonymous said...

See 12:36.

Anonymous said...

A & M has extended an interview offer to Clayton Thyne

Anonymous said...

Penn has contacted at least one candidate (I know first hand from the candidate) for an interview.

Anonymous said...

Ditto that Penn rumor.

Anonymous said...

Can you reveal the school of the subject of the Penn rumor?

Anonymous said...

I'd prefer if my name/affiliation not be divulged at this point.
-- Subject of the Penn rumor

Anonymous said...

Has Penn only contacted one candidate?

IR Rumor Mill said...

Are we discussing the University of Pennsylvania or Pennsylvania State University?

Anonymous said...

University of Pennsylvania. BTW, how does one contact the IR rumor mill directly (i.e., w/ private information)?

Anonymous said...

The LBJ School at UT-Austin is hiring in IPE/IR. Not sure if it's up on the APSA site...Here is a link to the job description. I didn't seem to find it, but application is due on October 15, though I'm not sure if that's a hard and fast deadline or if the committee is going to start reviewing app's then.

Does Kent State have an inside candidate? The job was posted 10/6 on the ISA web site and the ad says that review of applications will begin on 10/13. This seems like a very short timeframe to me.

Anonymous said...

The Kent State job was posted 9/6, not 10/6.

Anonymous said...

You're right, 7:50. It was posted on the ISA News blog (where I saw it) on 10/6 but on the regular employment list on 9/6. I guess my suspicion was unwarranted.

Looks like Jon Pevehouse has an interview at Harris.

http://harrisschool.uchicago.edu/Calendar/event_view.aspx?ID=1597&CategoryFilter=Academic%20Workshops

Anonymous said...

And one at Ohio State. Who says you can't go home again?

Anonymous said...

The blog masters ask if the Pevehouse interview is at Harris or Political Science. I don't know, but the contact person listed on the calendar is Cynthia Cook Conley--the same contact person on the Harris job ad. So I assume it is for Harris.

Any news/rumors about Duke's search?

Anonymous said...

Duke is apparently looking senior, or at the very least for a junior that will soon be tenured. Has anyone heard anything different or anything more?

Anonymous said...

Duke is looking for a senior faculty member.

Anonymous said...

Is Vanderbilt searching in IR this year? If so, at what level? Any rumors?

Anonymous said...

2:59 seems to have some fairly solid information. Care to expand on the parameters of the Duke search? Any candidates/subfields in play?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard anything about the early listings, with Sept deadlines, like Harvard B School?

Anonymous said...

Has Ohio State started making calls? Or is this only true for AP so far?

Anonymous said...

Above is accurate. I hear they need someone who will say yes to their offer, which makes things complicated.

"Penn job talks have been set" Source? Care to elaborate, substantiate (in the Rumors thread)?

Anonymous said...
I know someone who has a talk at Penn, so I can confirm they are set.

has anyone heard anything about the georgetown public policy position? do they have a short list yet? setting up flyouts?

Anonymous said...

Drake University, which has a comp/IR position, has its l/s list.

Anonymous said...

Does anybody know if Ohio State contacted people other than John Pevehouse and whether they are looking at juniors as well?

Anonymous said...

I heard secondhand that Duke is bringing in Dan Reiter for a job talk sometime this month.

Anonymous said...

Georgetown's Govt Dept has scheduled two interviews for its visiting IR position: Matthew Kroenig (PhD candidate at UC Berkeley) and Stacie Goddard (assist prof at Wellesley).

Anonymous said...

Sorry - correction to the above - it's not a visiting but rather a tenure-track position in the Govt Dept at Georgetown.

Anonymous said...

Are you sure this is a "visiting" position and not a "tenure track" position?

Anonymous said...

I thought Georgetown had already invited three or four people out for the Government job? Who are the others?

Anonymous said...

Georgetown is searching for three positions in IR this year:

-A jr IR/security position in the govt dept (those are the Goddard and Kroenig interviews)

-A jr security position in Georgetown's Security Studies Program (a master's program within its School of Foreign Service)--that's the position for which Jones, Kagan, Felbab-Brown, and Horowitz are being interviewed

-A sr security position in the Security Studies Program--those are the confirmed, but names undisclosed, interviews listed in the rumor mill table

Anonymous said...

Ohio State is interviewing Bear Braumoeller, in addition to Pevehouse, and will interview several junior people, who have yet to be determined by the IR search committee. OSU has two (and possibly three) hires in IR this year.

IR Rumor Mill said...

Why did we delete the tenure discussion here? At a minimum, speculation on individual tenure times belong on the "job market discussion" thread and not on the job rumors thread. But we're very wary of these kinds of questions, as we think they focus on the circumstances of individual job candidates. We've allowed at least one such discussion to proceed, but we generally watch them closely.

IR Rumor Mill said...

So if you want to ask a question about tenure, please post it elsewhere and be aware that we may redact it if the answer takes us beyond a simple "yes" or "no."

Anonymous said...

Why does this blog have such a strong Emory flavor?

Anonymous said...

The LBJ School ad lists Nov 11 as a final deadline. Have they already begun making a short list/calls?

Anonymous said...

Does UCLA have one or two searches in IR?

Anonymous said...

UCLA has one IR search that is viable though more vacancies that are not viable -- funding, campus politics, and so forth.

Anonymous said...

Campus politics? What does that mean?

Anonymous said...

"Campus politics." I mean -- inter- and cross-departmental conflict (or "bargaining" if you want to be more gracious), inter-divisional competition for resources (Arts & Sciences vs. Engineering, etc.), things of that nature. Not "campus politics" like the protests that were going on at Gaulladet.

Anonymous said...

I'm a bit shocked that 'campus politics', as described, have entailed that searches that had already been advertised have been cancelled. Whatever the details, doesn't seem to signal good things at a university (in this case UCLA).
