2008-2009 Job Rumors (September)

This is what it all comes down to: the kickoff thread to post job rumors for the 2008-2009 season. Remember the rules (and to check them if you're confused), such as:
1. all comments are moderated;

2. we seek confirmation before posting rumors concerning lateral moves;

3. source your rumors, e.g., "I overheard someone in the hall saying that his friend heard from another fellow at Belfer that her friend at Big State University knows the administrative assistant at Small Liberal Arts College who said that they were interviewing...." or, more likely, "source: the candidate";

4. keep it clean.
Also, remember that we sometimes inadvertently violate our own policies, that we appreciate emailed rumors, that we will always keep our sources confidential, and that threatening to sue us only makes us mad.

At the risk of repetition, we note that no one has a "legal right" to keep information about his or her interview a secret. If you're tempted to claim otherwise, consider a simple fact: if we find out about your interview, it usually means it already isn't much of a secret.

We often try to accommodate reasonable requests to hold information. We believe, moreover, that our attempts to operate in good faith account for the high-quality information we receive. We are very good about honoring requests to hold rumors by people who send us those rumors.

But do not assume that our team is made up entirely of powerless first-year graduate students (although it might be... we're not saying) and that making absurd threats against us won't engender blowback. We know some people who are very good with voodoo dolls.

the new 2008-09 tally board says that North Texas has scheduled interviews for either its middle eastern politics search or its human rights search. Does anyone know if this is true? Or, is it a placeholder for the fully-formatted big-board? I thought the deadline wasn't until Monday!

Anonymous said...

UNT's Mideast search committee has not even scheduled its first meeting yet.

Anonymous said...

UNT's deadlines are on September 15. The committees will not be meeting until all applications are in. If you are interested in applying, submit your applications soon, even if they are not 100% complete.

UC job seeker news from a vice-chancellor on budget issues:

"Unlike many health and social services providers in California, the University of California is currently receiving state funds, and UCLA has adequate cash flow to meet payroll and other essential expenses.

"However, until a final state budget is enacted, it is difficult to predict whether UC will be subject to 11th-hour decisions by the Legislature and the governor and how those decisions might affect UCLA’s current budget planning.

"Most of the questions have fallen into four broad categories, so I will address them here.

"1. Departments are continuing to assess their staffing needs within available resources. To provide temporary salary savings and thus minimize the potential for layoffs, many UCLA departments are participating in UC’s Staff and Academic Reduction in Time (START) program. The program allows employees to volunteer to reduce their time while retaining full retirement service and paid-leave credits.

"2. We do not expect that funding will be available for cost-of-living salary increases for faculty or staff this fiscal year, or for merit pay increases for staff or management. Merit reviews for ladder-rank faculty will proceed this year as in the past, and individual faculty members eligible for merit or promotional advancement this year will receive approved increases. Any salary actions for exclusively represented employees are subject to the collective bargaining process.

"3. While the governor has proposed that the salaries of some state employees be reduced to minimum wage, UC is not planning any actions related to the governor’s executive order.

"4. At their September 2008 meeting, the UC Regents are scheduled to continue discussions of policies related to the likelihood that contributions to the UC Retirement Plan will need to be restarted in the future. The amount and timing of employer and employee contributions has not been determined.

"No contribution is planned for the current 2008–09 fiscal year, which started July 1. For the past two decades, there has been no need for either UC or its employees to contribute to the UC Retirement Plan."

In the summer, I heard a third-hand rumor that William and Mary might open an IR search this year. Has anyone else heard anything about a possible opening there?

Anonymous said...

There likley will be an opening at William and Mary within the next year or two, but probably not this year according to a friend in the department.

Anonymous said...

Is it just me, or does there seem to be an unusually high number of job postings from universities in Texas? Does this say anything about the state of the economy in TX versus the rest of the country?

Anonymous said...

Yes, 6:37, it certainly does. Texas is doing well, other large states less so.

Anonymous said...

The State of Texas' coffers are doing quite well thanks to the oil money.

Anonymous said...

Also, a number of schools in Texas (led by A&M) have made growing the size of the faculty a major priority. Increasing faculty size is the obvious, if expensive, way of increasing quality and reputation of a university.

Anonymous said...

General question. If a school has a Sept 15 deadline, about how long on average does it take for schools to get to the interview point? I figure if they have such an early closing date for the search then they must want to get the search done and a job offered quickly. But I have no idea of a timeline.

Shame all of those jobs in Texas. Why does it have to be Texas? Too hot...

Anonymous said...

Last year some of the Sept 15th deadline schools seemed to start making calls at the very end of September/ 1st week of October. However, every search committee is unique (precious little snowflakes all), and they all move whenever they feel like moving.

Anonymous said...

I agree with 2:57 AM (really?).
There's no way to know when committees will move, but hopefully you'll hear about interviews here on the rumor mill.

To give you a sense of how long even the simplest things can take, I received a rejection letter from one DC school from last year's search just THIS WEEK.

Anonymous said...

Rejection letter this week for a job from last year? Ouch. I think if it academics were running job searches in corporate America they'd have been fired long ago. But at least you got a letter. I've had interviews where I never heard back from the school.

On time lines (one word or two?), no consensus? Ok. If I hear anything I'll pass it on.

Anonymous said...

Yes, if academics were running corporate America, then corporate America would be in really bad shape...uhh, never mind...

Anonymous said...

Texas schools aren't doing well because the state is collecting money; the state provides less than 20% of its state universities' budgets. The reason the schools are doing so well has more to do with the tuition deregulation that kicked in a few years back.

Oil money from the Permanent University Plan only goes to the UT system and the A&M system.

Anonymous said...

How about actual rumors. . .does anyone know if any of the Philadelphia-area schools are hiring in IR this year?

Anonymous said...

On the Philadelphia schools, Penn is definitely not hiring in IR this year, although they plan to have additional searches in future years (yes, not much help right now). Not sure about other places.

Anonymous said...

On Philly schools: Villanova had an ad out for an IR/Africa position last January or so. The deadline, I believe, was Sept 15th, though.

Anonymous said...

Ads that genuinely expect serious regional expertise from an IR major always seem strange to me. In the major programs, IR majors can get a decent general comparative minor, but without languages or foreign travel. Those doing serious regional study usually, in turn, don't do what mainstream IR folks would consider IR. Who are these departments expecting to be out there?

Anonymous said...

I once hoped that they'd be looking for someone like me, who combines both IR & CP with regional specialization including language skills. I once took seriously those grand speeches about the need to break-down the boundaries between sub-disciplines. Unfortunately, the market seems to still prefer people who can be easily pigeon-holed into doing one sub-subdiscipline extremely well over those who cover more ground, but in somewhat less depth. My experience suggests that this holds both with regards to research universities AND liberal arts colleges.

Anonymous said...

To 6:21 -- It's a developing expectation that you should at least be able to teach both fields on the undergrad level. Not specialized classes, but at least the introductory courses. The convergence of comparative and IR at some basic points might allow for this. At the upper levels however it's a bit of a push.

Ask for twice what you need at the outset and in the end you might just get down to what you want.

Anonymous said...

Yes, many schools are combining comparative and IR, at least at the undergrad level. Whether this is good or bad is debatable, but it's clearly happening.

Anonymous said...

I'd like to announce that I've suspended my job search, and I'd ask all others to do the same. At this time, we need to come together as IR scholars--not as realists, liberals, or constructivists, but as IR scholars--and figure out why there appear to be fewer jobs this year. I'd ask you all not to give any job talks until this crisis is resolved.

Anonymous said...

12:59pm....What are you smoking? Whatever--please, by all means go ahead, everyone stop looking for a job. In the meanwhile, I'll be coming together with myself to resolve the crisis of finding a job so that I can support my family. If that is not meant as a joke--somebody better call a proctologist to help get that person's head examined.

Anonymous said...

How about Multi-tasking.....you should be able to deal with a crisis such as this, live your life, give job interviews, work on research papers, and fret over when the phone will ring.....

Anonymous said...

12:59 here. Sarcasm, people. Sarcasm. Step away from the ledge, 2:47. Step away from the ledge.

Question for NCState...There was an IR job posted in July. It's now gone from APSAnet and is not on the online app system at NCState. There is an APSAnet NCState public policy job listed now, but it also is missing from the online app system at NCState.

Have both searches been canceled? Has the IR search been canceled?

Camber Warren has a talk at Harvard.

Source: Duke grad student.

Anonymous said...

Ok, aside from Haavaad, any rumors about other interviews being scheduled?

Anonymous said...

Didn't Camber Warren give a job talk at Harvard last year too?

Anonymous said...

Yes, Camber Warren gave a job talk at Harvard last year as well.

Anonymous said...

That's peculiar.

Anonymous said...

Not necessarily. The committe deadlocked last year. Schools do sometimes interview the same candidates again: the composition of a committee changes, the pool of applicants shift, candidates' portfolios change, and junior candidates become "less junior."

That being said, I'd like to ask the moderators to prevent this from becoming a specific discussion of the merits/demerits/circumstances of one or more job candidates.

Anonymous said...

Who got the Davis talks?

Anonymous said...

Who's on the market from Belfer and CISAC?

Anonymous said...

To be frank, why should we be talking about Harvard anyway?

If you are really a contender for a job there, you're probably not slumming it on the Rumor Mill with the rest of us, anyway. You have friends and connections to tell you what you need to know.

So, let's get back to the jobs that the other 99.9% of us have a shot at.

Anonymous said...

Hey, 4:12, hate the game, don't hate the playa ; - ) You are embarrassing yourself!

(As much as one can do that on an anoymous blog.)

PS - Ivy Leaguers hang out here too...

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I have to say that as someone linked in with the networks that 4:12 refers to, I've spent plenty of time on this blog. Networks in political science are far from perfectly connected, even for the most connected people.

Also, when it comes to interviews at Harvard and similar places, it's worth noting that one reason for interest is that early interview announcements at top schools help other schools calibrate -- just as candidates are trying to get a sense of where they might get a job, so departments are trying to figure out who among the range of candidates in whom they might be interested they'll have a reasonable shot at landing. Seeing this process from the other side, there's a lot more strategy than I anticipated when I was on the market.

Anonymous said...

I heard that BU is now in a hiring freeze. Can anyone confirm that and whether it applies to the IR job there as well?

Anonymous said...

It looks like the BU job is going ahead:

"The university, which employs 8,000 people, has roughly 200 to 300 staff openings, said Mercurio, expecting more specific analysis today. All faculty searches already authorized, as well as dorm security and campus police positions, will continue, and the jobs should be filled, he said."

I think the market next year is going to be worse.

Anonymous said...

Can anyone confirm whether the University of Iowa and Iowa State have decided on candidates? Their deadlines were the end of September and middle of September respectively.

Anonymous said...

Who are the Michigan Ford School candidates?

Anonymous said...

11:51: I wouldn't panic yet. I don't have specific knowledge about those searches, but one week (Iowa) or even three weeks (Iowa State) may only get them to a short list.

I would start wondering in about another week for Iowa State, another three for Iowa. As I said, this is not based on specific knowledge, just experience on both sides of searches.

Anonymous said...

"The Big Board says that Valparaiso has contacted its short list. Can anyone confirm this? I don't care about names, just if they've made contact."

I don't know if this is confirmation, but I recieved an email with the following as the first paragraph. I hope this helps answer the question...

Thank you very much for your interest in Valparaiso University. I have read your material and we think that you would be a candidate we would consider for the position. We have had many applications for the position and as part of the process of narrowing the field, I thought I would explain a bit more about us to make sure that you are genuinely interested in teaching at a place like Valparaiso University.

Anonymous said...

I also received the above e-mail from Valparaiso. Not sure how many they sent out.

Anonymous said...

I don't think that email from Valparasio means a whole lot. I think a lot of people got it. At least, I did, way back in July after I sent in my application, and so did a friend of mine, in August after he sent his. I am not saying that it goes to everyone, but he and I are so different I sincerely doubt we were both on the short list, especially since there couldn't have been a short list in July. Anyway, the rest of the email basically says "the job sucks, are you sure you want it? Please reply." I think its a creative tactic to weed out candidates, but that's all I'd read into it.

Anonymous said...

Yes, this is the e-mail. And it's fairly daunting: to their credit, they are *very* clear about the department, its obligations, and the university environment. Partly because it was so truthful about what I could and could not expect, I removed myself from the shortlist.

Anonymous said...

I asked the question about Valparaiso and I also got one of those emails before I interviewed with them at APSA. I was told that the email was designed to thin the herd. I actually want the job a Valparaiso, so the email didn't put me off.

Yes, asking for additional material is fairly common. And, yes, receiving that request likely means that the department is very interested in the candidate. The poliscijobrumors website also has a post that claims the University of Alabama has already made offers on their IR position. Any confirmation of that?

The wiki says U. of Toronto's interviews are "underway or scheduled." Is this true? And do we know who they've called?

Anonymous said...

University of Michigan has scheduled three interviews. Source: I am one of the candidates.

There was a rumor here that phone interviews were underway at Richmond, but the tally board does not reflect it and the Wiki has not mention of it... Moderator: What's the status of this rumor? Any efforts to confirm it underway?

Dartmouth has made calls (Source: Rumor 3rd hand from Dartmouth faculty)

Re: U Michigan- Did they call for their pure IR search or the IR/Comparative search? (Or the methods search?)

Kudos to the University of Toronto for being so quick about alerting failed candidates that they are out of the pool. If only all schools were so quick...

Friend of Richmond interviewee: Is your friend a security type or a governance type?

Not splitting hairs, just trying to ascertain whether the two positions are being filled concurrently (bad news for governance types) or consecutively (good news for governance, bad for security candidates not yet contacted). Cheers.

Anonymous said...

Friend of Richmond interviewee here.

My friend is up for the global governance position. No idea if security is consecutive or concurrent.

Anonymous said...

Thanks. There's already been confirmation that Richmond has called on the security position. News that it has called on governance means that it's probably safe for both sets of applicants to cross UR off the "waiting list."

Dartmouth has definitely scheduled interviews.

Any follow up on Richmond after the phone interview? Have they finalized the list for campus visit?

Anonymous said...

The folks at Richmond told me when I had a phone interview at the end of last week that it would be another 2 weeks before invites were made -- need to have department meeting and get Dean's approval.

Anonymous said...

Thanks. So, no information on who has made the final list, right?

Updates on the UCSD IR/PS slot?

Any word on the UCSD IR jobs? I haven't seen them on the tally board either...

Did Columbia's Department of Political Science post an IR ad this year or were all the jobs for SIPA?
