IR Job Rumors Fall 2006

*new*[2006-01-28] Additional rumor mills have been independently started, for American and Comparative Politics as well as Political Theory and Public Law. Cross-posting of CP information is probably a good idea, since a significant fraction of CP and IR jobs overlap (unlike CP and AP or IR and AP).

[2005-12-17] To prevent too many comments from building up, periodically a new post that summarizes all the comments will be placed at the top of the blog; to view old comments, see the posts from [October 16-November 17] and [November 18-December 17], which contain old comments.

[2005-12-17] New column added to list whether a job has been filled (and by whom if the information exists).

[2005-12-03] An increasing number of Comparative Politics posts are being made. While only posts that refer to jobs in the IR Job List Fall 2006 will be added to the master table below, contributors should feel free to post information about CP jobs, since there is substantial overlap.

[2005-11-20] To prevent comments being lost, please post all rumors here rather than on the individual rumor postings. Comments have been turned off on these postings.

[2005-11-20] Please use discretion when posting rumors of offers or acceptances; if possible, only post an offer if it is public knowledge.

Got a rumor on which school have invited candidates to interviews or have sent out job
offers? Post a comment here. Names of candidates are not necessary, but can be useful.

Please include some information on the source of your knowledge that will allow others to evaluate your information. Are you a member of the department interviewing? A friend or colleague of a candidate? Please be as specific in your information and sources as possible (while maintaining anonymity if you wish).

Want to see a list of jobs? See the IR Job List Fall 2006 entry.

Note: The Institution links will take you to the original job posting; the Rumors link will take you to the rumor posting. If there is a link but no date in the Rumors column, no substantive information (e.g., a list of interviewees) has been received; dates are updated when new rumors appear. The table is sorted from most recent to oldest rumor.

[C] appears next to dates when additional posts appear to confirm an initial rumor of interviews. If you have independent confirmation of interviews being conducted at a university that does not have a [C] or a list of candidates, please post a comment. A [?] appears if information disputing a rumor of interviews has occurred.

If you have complaints, comments, or suggestions (about this blog), please post a comment on the IR Rumor Mill Discussion post rather than here. If you would like to complain or discuss the job market itself, please post a comment on the IR Job Market Discussion post rather than here.

what is going on with a&m?

Anonymous said...

what is going on with the Bay Area schools (UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz)?

Anonymous said...

Does anybody have news on Richmond's Europe search?

Anonymous said...

A highly reliable source has informed me that the position at Trinity (Hartford) has been filled. I noticed that the IR jobs at Clemson and Alabama have not been listed. They were posted earlier this fall on ejobs, but are no longer listed.

Anonymous said...

Many jobs that were on ejobs are now gone because their posting expired close to the deadline. It doesn't mean that they are filled yet. I know this because I was contacted about a job and when I went to look at the ad again, it was gone.

Brett Benson (Duke 2006) joins Vanderbilt:
http://sitemason.vanderbilt.edu/psci/faculty#benson

I heard that Reed isn't going to make offers to any of their 3 candidates -- true? Know what their plans are?

Anonymous said...

Reed interviewed three candidates: Emily Beaulieu (UCSD), Alex Montgomery (Stanford), and (I believe) Craig Borowiak (Duke, teaching at Haverford), although that may have been for Reed's theory position. Montgomery was offered the IR position and has accepted.

IR Rumor Mill said...

A note: While jobs that have expired on APSA ejobs cannot be found through searching, direct links still work. For example, most of the job postings on the IR Job List Fall 2006 can still be accessed through the APSA elisting link at the beginning of the posts; e.g., the APSA elisting link in the University of Nebraska-Omaha post, which cannot be found through searching ejobs, will show up through the direct link. Jobs as far back as Fall 2003 can be retrieved this way.

The jobs on the IR Job List Fall 2006 post were updated roughly weekly and were based on field of specialization = "International Relations" on APSA or CPSA. Some may have been missed.

Interesting about the MIT offers.

Any word on hires in other fields?

Anonymous said...

On Richmond's Europe search: the offer was made to Willem Maas (Yale PhD, ass't Prof, non-tenure track at NYU). Maas apparently has not yet decided whether to accept.

Anonymous said...

Does anybody have news on Western Washington's search?

Anonymous said...

UC Davis closed its institutions search without hiring anyone after interviewing three people.

Anonymous said...

Holger Schmidt (Columbia) has accepted the transnational security position at George Washington University (Elliott School). The department decided not to make an offer for its general international security position.

Anonymous said...

Michigan IPE has established a short list and invited candidates out for talks.

Anonymous said...

Western Washington had a long short list a couple months ago, narrowed it down to a 6-person short list a month ago and called the first three people for interviews (probably in early December). No idea if they made a decision.

Anonymous said...

Idean Salehyan (UCSD) has accepted an offer from North Texas.

Anonymous said...

any info about Emory?

Anonymous said...

Emory has made an offer to a candidate. I'm not sure if the candidate has accepted yet.

Anonymous said...

I heard Emory had offered their job to Idean Salehyan.

Anonymous said...

That's not true: Emory did not offer the job to Saleyhan.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard anyting about the job openings at the University of Utah (IR and CP)? They interviewed 4 IR and 4 CP candidates. The faculty meeting was last week.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know who got the IR and CP jobs at Madison? Last thing I heard was that they interviewed senior candidates only.

Anonymous said...

Thad Dunning got an offer from Wisconsin.

Anonymous said...

Another question: does anybody know what happened with Pitt's search(es)? Have they made offers?

Anonymous said...

That is interesting about MIT; looks like they're going on a hiring binge.

Anonymous said...

Any information on the Comparative searches at Ohio State?

Anonymous said...

Univ of Delaware extended an offer to their top candidate for the IO position, and the candidate just accepted.

Anonymous said...

I heard Texas A&M has an offer and acceptance on at least one of the IR jobs.

Anonymous said...

Any chance you could disclose who accepted TAMU's offer?

Anonymous said...

I just heard that another candidate rejected an offer from Kentucky -- their fourth rejected offer.

Anonymous said...

I just heard that Pittsburgh did not make any offers. It seems that the department cannot make up their mind like last year.

Anonymous said...

You "just heard" wrong about Pitt.

Anonymous said...

Please enlighten us then: does Pitt have offers out right now, have they been accepted, or what?

Anonymous said...

I heard that Pitt made an offer to Bridget Coggins (Ohio State) but I have no idea whether she accepted the offer.

Anonymous said...

What is going on with Vanderbilt?

Anonymous said...

Just to clarify: I heard that Pittsburgh did not make an offer for their CP-Europe job opening. Briget Coggins seems to be for the IR job.

Anonymous said...

Just to clarify: The comment on Pittsburgh not making an offer was in regard to their CP-Europe job opening. I should have said this in my posting.

Anonymous said...

Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) made an offer and the candidate accepted.

Anonymous said...

Clemson has invited candidates in for their IR slot.

Anonymous said...

Do you know who took the Delaware job?

Anonymous said...

I am curious, who did Pitt invite for the CP-EU position?

Anonymous said...

I know that they interviewed 4 people for the CP-EU position at Pittsburgh. One of them was Rebecca Oliver (PhD Candidate at Northwestern).

Anonymous said...

On the Richmond Europe search: it seems to me that the position is still open since they contacted people on their long short list asking if they are still available. They are considering bringing in 1 or 2 more candidates to campus.

Anonymous said...

Vandy has at least one offer out right now. I heard it is to Michaela Mattes.

Anonymous said...

Kyle Beardsley (UCSD) has accepted an offer from Emory.

Anonymous said...

UVa made an offer and they expect the candidate to accept.

Anonymous said...

Virginia's offer was in fact accepted by Todd Sechser (Stanford).

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know what is going on at Yale/Comparative Politics? Have they made any offers?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard anything about the IR search at Alabama?

Anonymous said...

Yale has made an offer. I don't know if it was accepted - I think not.

Anonymous said...

The CP offer at Yale is also to Dunning.

Anonymous said...

Any information on Yale's Japanese Politics position?

Anonymous said...

Anyone know what is going on with Dartmouth's IR search?

Anonymous said...

Rumor has it that Dartmouth (IR) extended an offer to Bridget Coggins.

Anonymous said...

I heard interviews still occurring in January at Dartmouth

Anonymous said...

Does that mean no offer to Coggins? Or are there multiple positions at Dartmouth?

Anonymous said...

Just received a letter (dated December 19) saying the IR slot at the University of Georgia has been filled. Anyone know who filled it?

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know whether Coggins accepted the offer from Dartmouth?

Anonymous said...

Coggins did get an offer. No information on any other details (acceptance, other interviews, or anything else).

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know what happened with McGill's EU search?

Anonymous said...

And Michigan? I heard that Kurizaki interviewed there. Who else?

Anonymous said...

CSU Northridge has made an offer.

Anonymous said...

didn't kurizaki take TAMU's offer?

Anonymous said...

UW-Oshkosh has made an offer and expects the candidate to accept.

Anonymous said...

Jonathan Rodden of MIT is interviewing at Chicago this week.

Anonymous said...

Anyone heard anything about Middlebury or Bowdoin?

Anonymous said...

Bowdoin made an offer; I don't know anything more.

Anonymous said...

Kurizaki and McLean accepted TAMU offers.

Anonymous said...

Tonya Putnam (Stanford) received an offer from Columbia. Congrats, Tonya!

Anonymous said...

Re: Middlebury -- In early December I heard they had made an offer to Sechser (Stanford). But a previous post said he was going to Virginia...so they may have made another offer by now.

Anonymous said...

Any news on Georgia Tech?

Anonymous said...

Middlebury did make an offer to Amy Oakes from Ohio State.

Anonymous said...

Putnam has a job talk at UCLA

Anonymous said...

Third-hand, I heard U Colorado made an offer to Moonhawk Kim (Stanford).

Anonymous said...

Who got the Delaware job?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard anything about Auburn?

Anonymous said...

Barnard (CP) made an offer and the candidate accepted.

Anonymous said...

Middlebury is calling candidates for interviews. Don't know if the Oakes information is correct or premature.

Anonymous said...

Who did Barnard hire? If the candidate has already accepted, I don't see the harm in releasing the name.

Anonymous said...

Or, for that matter, the anonymous hirees at Carleton, DePaul, Dickinson, Trinity, Delaware, and Miami. Unless they're planning on censoring the course catalogs, these will all be public knowledge shortly... we should at least be able to celebrate the successes of the job market while adding to our rejection piles...

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know whether Finan has accepted either UCSD's or Berkeley's offers (Comparative Politics slot)?

Anonymous said...

The tone of the post made at 3:08 PM, January 05, 2006 seems to assume that the people posting the information about hirees have complete information, but are holding out. This may not always be the case. I posted the information about the Trinity job because I know that it was filled. I interviewed for that job and was told that someone else had accepted their offer, but I had no clue as to who else was even being interviewed let alone who they hired.

Anonymous said...

Yoav Gortzak (Ohio State) has accepted the offer from ASU for the IR position.

Anonymous said...

Did Moonhawk Kim get the Delaware job?

Anonymous said...

I think Brock Tessman got the Georgia IR job.

Anonymous said...

Amy Oakes turned down Middlebury and took a job at William and Mary.

Anonymous said...

I thought the W&M position was taken by an internal candidate...

Anonymous said...

Regarding W&M, Holger Schmidt (Columbia, doing a visiting stint at W&M) turned them down to take the GW position.

Anonymous said...

Devashree Gupta (Cornell) accepted the Carleton job.

Anonymous said...

Word has it Sebastian Rosato accepted a position at Notre Dame.

Anonymous said...

Did Singer accept the MIT or Penn IR slots?

Anonymous said...

I have heard from two different sources that Kentucky is going back into its pool.

Anonymous said...

I heard second or third hand that someone turned down a senior hire at Kentucky. Is this true? Which search? Reason?

Anonymous said...

From a good friend in the department. Kentucky rejected a counter offer made by someone for one of the senior spots. The counter offer was way out of line for this person's rank.

Anonymous said...

Any news on some of the New England schools (Northeastern, UMASS, URI, etc)?

Anonymous said...

URI have invited candidates for interviews during late Jan and early Feb

Anonymous said...

Northeastern has invited candidates for interviews during late January...

Anonymous said...

Dan Reiter of Emory University will visit the Department and present his
job talk "War as a Solution to the Problem of Credible Commitments" at 1:30
PM on Friday, January 20, in Pick Lounge.

Anonymous said...

In the last post: "the department" is not very helpful.

Anonymous said...

Any dirt on WashU in St. Louis?

Anonymous said...

Berkeley did their interviews a long time ago...so does anybody know what happened with that job? Did they even make an offer?

Anonymous said...

David Patel accepted the comparative politics job at Cornell University

Anonymous said...

If Berkeley is considering a tenured offer, it takes time for such an appointment to be processed (outside letters, tenure vote, university tenure committees, etc.)

Anonymous said...

A friend from Pittsburgh told me that Burcu Savun (Rice University) accepted Pitt's IR position.

Anonymous said...

so, those of us in american and comparative were jealous so we now have our own blog at...

http://americanandcomparativejobs.blogspot.com/

please do not expect the same quality as the ir rumor mill. it will not be so sophisticated.

Funny about St. John's...as recently as last week they were still requesting updated materials from some applicants.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know if Auburn has invited candidates in? I know that they had a long short list in early December.

Anonymous said...

Any word on the search at UMass?

Anonymous said...

UMass has invited candidates for interviews.

Anonymous said...

Auburn has invited candidates for interviews.

Anonymous said...

I might be wrong about St. John's then if they're still asking for additional materials from people. They invited candidates for interviews in October and sent letters to at least this one saying that they made an offer to another candidate, who accepted it.

Anonymous said...

Bridget Coggins (Ohio State) has accepted the position at Dartmouth.

Anonymous said...

As far as I know, Tarar was not offered the Penn job after Singer took the MIT position.
