*new*[2006-01-28] Additional rumor mills have been independently started, for American and Comparative Politics as well as Political Theory and Public Law. Cross-posting of CP information is probably a good idea, since a significant fraction of CP and IR jobs overlap (unlike CP and AP or IR and AP).
[2005-12-17] New column added to list whether a job has been filled (and by whom if the information exists).
[2005-12-03] An increasing number of Comparative Politics posts are being made. While only posts that refer to jobs in the IR Job List Fall 2006 will be added to the master table below, contributors should feel free to post information about CP jobs, since there is substantial overlap.
[2005-11-20] To prevent comments being lost, please post all rumors here rather than on the individual rumor postings. Comments have been turned off on these postings.
[2005-11-20] Please use discretion when posting rumors of offers or acceptances; if possible, only post an offer if it is public knowledge.
Got a rumor on which school have invited candidates to interviews or have sent out job offers? Post a comment here. Names of candidates are not necessary, but can be useful.
Please include some information on the source of your knowledge that will allow others to evaluate your information. Are you a member of the department interviewing? A friend or colleague of a candidate? Please be as specific in your information and sources as possible (while maintaining anonymity if you wish).

Any rumors about UMICH? Who are they interviewing? When?
Michigan has interviewed Kurizaki and Trager.
Universite Laval in Quebec City (Canada) has made an offer for its junior IR position and the offer has been accepted.
Any word on whether Chico State has made an offer/hire?
Any news on Alabama?
Alabama has an offer out to Gibler.
Any news on UNLV? UN-Reno?
Barak Mendelsohn (Cornell) was interviewed in Oklahoma
Reno appears to be filled, no word on who.

Kentucky is brining 3 new people out in the next few weeks.
I just do not think pickling people in salt water is going to help Kentucky in their attempts to hire. We all remember what happened at UVA last year.
Re: UVA -- Please enlighten, for those of us who don't remember -- no need to name names, though. (And what does "pickling people in salt water" mean, exactly?)
Well, they might just be immersing people ala Ohio St. It HAS worked for them. Kentucky, by now, must be ready to try ANYTHING.
Does anyone know what the last few post mean? Salt water??
The entire thing about salt water refers back to a joke someone was making in reference to the typo/misspelling in post at 7:00 AM, February 10 in which someone wrote, "Kentucky is brining 3 new people out in the next few weeks." Obviously, that person intended to write "bringing" instead of "brining" (i.e., using salt water or brine). As for some of the opaque references in subsequent messages to specific departments, I don't understand them either.
I feel so much better about my sense of humor!
Portland State University (CP/IR) hired someone.
Kentucky has contacted the next group they are bringing out.
Any news on what Chicago is doing?
Could the person who posted above expand on their reference to salt water and Ohio State?
Dan Morey is interviewing at Kentuck in the next two weeks.
Any news on University of Rhode Island?
Regarding Rhode Island--I received a letter dated 1/18/05 indicating they have finished the review of all applications and I did not make the final selection process.
Oops--it was dated 1/18/06.
Gibler to Georgia State? or new round?
What does "Gibler to Georgia State? or new round?" mean?
Colorado State hired Braithwaite (Penn State) for their IR job.
Any news on California State University at Fresno, Fullerton, Chico, etc?
If Gibler turns GSU down they would most likely make an offer to their number 2 choice from the last group they interviewed.
URI was interviewing 5 people. At least one person cancelled the interview.
I am sure Fullerton has already started on campus interviews. First round phone interviews were conducted in December.
Fresno conducted on campus interviews the last few weeks of January. I don't know if they have made an offer yet or not.
Heard third hand that CU-Boulder is having candidates out next week for its second hire.
How about Chico State?
One of the DePaul jobs went to Leslie Wirpsa (USC)
How about Wisconsin Platteville?
UCSC has re-advertised its post from last July (http://irrumormill.blogspot.com/2005/07/university-of-california-santa-cruz_27.html). Considering the pay they are offering, it's small wonder they didn't get any good applicants.
well what IS the salary offered by UCSC? tantalizing...
UC salaries are standardized across the system. A few years ago, I think they were hiring advanced assistants in the mid to high 60s.
Perhaps it is a problem within Santa Cruz, not with the low quality of the applicants. It is difficult to believe that two consecutive years of search haven't yeilded anyone worthy.
UCSC is a *very* heterodox department.
Probably a dream job for the Perestroika crowd, rite? (Or am I wrong...)
It's true that UC salaries are on a standard scale, but what new hires get depends on whether they have more than offer. Without an offer, they are likely to get an on-scale salary, which was less than 50K the last time I checked. With a competitive offer, they will get the market rate, which is why UC hired some people at mid 60K and above.
Yes, perfect for a Perestroikan. As someone "mainstream", I can't imagine trying to work in that department, as lovely as Santa Cruz is.
Anyone heard anything about 'bama? When does Gibler have to make a decision?
As to whether Santa Cruz is a "perfect for a Perestroikan," that's a hard generalization to make. Perestroika has many advocates who are nonetheless "mainstream."
To take one example, John Mearsheimer is a supporter of Perestroika. Judging by the attendance at any APSA panel Mearsheimer is on, he also is pretty mainstream. And I don't think he'd be a very good fit at Santa Cruz.
Perestroika and "mainstream" are not mutually incompatible, unless, of course, you think the mainstream is pretty narrow.
Gibler accepted the Bama offer
Has anyone heard anything about the IR position Clemson is trying to fill?
Or the Mich. St. position at James Madison College?
Interesting about Gibler, I heard today that GSU was still waiting on his reply to their offer.
Western Washington and Northern Arizona have completed their searches. No word on who they selected, other than the fact that it was not me :(.
RE: the 6:43pm post above... Georgia State made an offer to their #2 candidate last week, so my guess is that you are misinformed.
Clemson made an offer and the candidate accepted it. No idea who.
So who is the Georgia State #2 candidate?
As for Santa Cruz, I heard this is the fourth year they haven't hired in Politics. They had very solid candidates. They keep doing a senior/junior search. They made an offer last year to a junior, but who can live on 50 K in Santa Cruz? The department seems to be going through growing pains, and the university per se, appears to be shifting from teaching to a more research-focused agenda.
Dunning accepted at Yale, too.
Letters have been received in the past few months by the following schools indicating they have made a hire or I'm not on their short list.
These schools already have some rumors reported--
Toronto
NYU
Wisconsin-Madison
Texas-Austin
Millikin
Hofstra
Northern AZ Univ
Univ. of RI
Cal St. Northridge
Chicago (Harris)
Bowdoin
These schools have no rumors posted but I have received rejection letters from these as well--
Notre Dame
Kent State
Naval Postgraduate School
Monash (Australia)
Victoria (Canada)
Univ. of GA
Baylor
CA Polytechnic
Shippensburg
John Carroll
York College of PA
SUNY Cortland
I have omitted schools where job rumors are confirmed.
Can anyone confirm the following story? Apparently, Kentucky interviewed 6 people, made 4 offers, and has no acceptances. They are now interviewing 3 more. [All of this came out on this website above.] Well, I just heard the craziest thing: since two slots are still unfilled, they are going to make an immediate offer to any of the 3 new candidates who pass muster, without waiting for all of the interviews to be completed. Is this true? Is it even legal? I guess at least you know that, if you get an interview, you get an offer!
What's the problem with GSU and Kentucky? Didn't apply to both but just curious. I thought GSU and Kentucky were not that bad.
There are many reasons why a school may have made multiple offers. If its candidates have had multiple interviews and offers elsewhere, it may well say more about the quality of the candidates than it does about the school itself.
I think Kentucky is really having problems with Perestroika versus quant issues. At least that's been the word the last few years. I know nothing of GSU.
I don't know much about Kentucky, but I think the hiring process can be quirky at GSU. I think last year for an IR search they brought in 4 candidates initially. They couldn't make up their mind, so they brought in 2 more candidates. Then, they decided to make an offer to one of the original 4 candidates. Apparently, this sort of thing is not unusual there, so there is some issue with them making up their minds.
I have ZERO knowledge of what's going on at Kentucky, but that won't stop me from hazarding a guess. Perhaps they've been told they'll lose the line if they don't hire *somebody* this year. If that's the case, then you keep going until you fill the position. It at least seems a plausible explanation for the behavior described above.
So if you're a candidate, do you take a job under those circumstances? Even if it means another year in grad school? Or do you take the job and try to get out quickly?
Yeah, you take the job. The job market is just way too uncertain.
This discussion about Kentucky is a good example of the danger of these blogs. It is all based on false information. First, Kentucky has made three offers, not four. Yes, they were all turned down, but one was to Susan Hyde and the other two were to people who were in tenure track jobs. Second, Kentucky is NOT making an offer after only interviewing the first of the three additional candidates. That information is obviously being spread by someone who is trying to ruffle some feathers. Third, the Kentucky search is actually two searches - a Comparative search and an IR search. Kentucky initially interviewed 3 for each field, made a total of three offers, and now has invited three more. The first candidate was a Comparativist, the second two IR. The prevailing view in the department is that the first candidate is not competing with the next two, hence the department was given PERMISSION to make an offer to the first candidate, but they decided to wait untile more people came in precisely because of this blog. The moral of this story is - don't believe everything you read on this blog and don't read too much into why a department does or does not make an offer to you.
But why even bother inviting Susan Hyde out? That seems a waste of everyone's time. Did they think she was really was going to take that job?
So can someone explain to me why a department won't make an offer to someone because of a blog? Does that make any sense?
I totally agree with the "don't believe everything you read" comment, but c'mon, 6 interviews and no acceptances... that kinda speaks for itself, doesn't it?
No one knew that Hyde would be getting 1,000 interviews when Kentucky contacted her.
As for GSU, their salaries are on the low end, which may have hurt.
So can someone explain to me why a department won't make an offer to someone because of a blog? Does that make any sense?
I totally agree with the "don't believe everything you read" comment, but c'mon, 6 interviews and no acceptances... that kinda speaks for itself, doesn't it?
I don't think that going 0 for 3 for the first three offers across two searches is necessarily unusual when one candidate turns it down for a job at Yale, and the other two are senior candidates.
So can someone explain to me why a department won't make an offer to someone because of a blog? Does that make any sense?
Only if you do not want people to know what you are doing.
In response to pay, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, GSU is not much different than any other school. GSU's average starting salary for a new assistant is 57 K, Kentucky is 57.7, UCLA is 65, Santa Cruz is 59, and Michigan is 67.1. Once you factor in cost of living, you are better at GSU than many big schools in California.
See http://chronicle.com/stats/aaup/aaupresults.php
The Chronicle numbers are not that accurate. Keep in mind that they are averaged in with natural science, law, engineering, medicine, etc. There is no way that UCSC's poli sci asst prof pay is 59k without a counter offer.
More on salaries: http://chronicle.com/weekly/v51/i33/33a01201.htm
Political scientists are among the best paid Assistant Profs: average salaries for political scientists are higher than those for all humanities and social science fields except economics, and better than some science fields. The average salary of all Assistant Profs at PhD-granting institutions was $60,567 in 2004-05.
"The AAUP salary survey does not collect data on salary differentials by discipline. Since 1974, however, the Office of Institutional Research and Information Management at Oklahoma State University has collected faculty salary data annually by discipline and rank for a set of doctoral-granting institutions." (http://www.aaup.org/surveys/zrep.htm, ca. 2004)
I haven't seen the Oklahoma State numbers (it's a pay service) but it seems that they'd be likely to be more reliable because those data are broken down by discipline.
I also agree with the post that urges people to think about cost of living differences. On GSU: cost of living in Atlanta is certainly not cheap, but it's not as horrendously expensive as some cities on the coasts.
I heard that Bob Kelly (Ohio State) turned down the IR job at Concordia University (Montreal) Don't know whether they will make another (#2, #3?) offer to anyone else.
The above post (1:02 pm Feb. 23) regarding Kelly is incorrect. Concordia has made an offer and is awaiting a decision by its first choice candidate.
Kentucky is NOT postponing any decisions due to the blog, contrary to a previous post.
The above post (6:12 pm Feb 23) regarding Kentucky is misleading. Several Kentucky faculty ARE CLOSELY WATCHING this and its related blogs. Whether they have postponed their decisions entirely DUE TO these blogs is hard to infer, but they are definitely part of the process.
A not-entirely-trustworthy source at Michigan State tells me that Cristina Bodea (Rochester) took a job there.
re: 12:28 PM, February 23, 2006
could you post the link that gives you temporary access to the article or the polisci numbers (either the initial poster or anyone else). Some of us are interested in the numbers, but don't have access.
UMass has made an offer; don't know to who, just know it wasn't me.
Vtech is inviting candidates to interview.
I do not know who is posting all of this "inside information" about Kentucky but your blog's source is (intentionally or not) misinforming you about what is happening at UK. I will not bother to rebut all the garbage in here, but I will say that (1) UK chose to go after some superb people in the Fall, even though they were longshots, because of a consensual commitment to research excellence, and (2) The people being interviewed this Spring have been invited NOT because of a perception that the lines were at risk but because they were strong scholars who had been on the department's radar from the beginning.
Geez! I understand that a rumor mill is going to get some things wrong, but I am pretty angry that someone would lie about why a department decided to bring someone in. That is not just a lie about an institution. It is also libel directed at the candidates. What kind of scum does that?
Have you heard from Sacramento?
From what I've heard (as of last week), Sacramento has not yet completed their search, at least for the second of two positions.
I haven't been on this blog for awhile and am trying to figure out the recent line.
So who did Kentucky interview in the fall? I get that Hyde was one of them, at least judging by the posts above. But who were the others? And why were they longshots?
Any rumors about Hendrix College?
Don't know which is worse: the scum who share information regarding "rumors" that might not be 100% accurate (welcome to the discipline friends), or the scum who raise the specter of libel in a supposedly friendly information-sharing fora.
Let's keep some perspective folks. Share your info and let's not bully.
If something is 100 percent correct, is it a rumor? We should all try to be correct, but we cannot assume someone is intentionally spreading lies just because a rumor they post turns out to be incorrect.
Anyone know if Auburn made a final offer? Likewise, who is VA Tech bringing in?
Sacramento was interviewing 8 people for 2 positions. At least one person withdrew after accepting another job offer.
GSU has an offer out to Morey
If you spread "information" about someone's situation that has a negative impact on their professional reputation, and you exhibit a disregard for the truth, that's libel. The speed and insider nature of the comments coming from Kentucky make it clear that the source either has (or could have) access to correct information. There will be no consequences of spreading this libel because of the veil of anonymity, but it should alert other readers to the fact that not everything being posted here is in fact "friendly."
I agree that we ought to worry more about how false information posted here affects people. This isn't a fence post, and these aren't whispers. You ought to be pretty sure of your information before you risk posting something that indirectly insults someone on the market.
I can't think of a single way in which the original Kentucky post is libelous. Moreover, the swift (and sometimes contradicting) response by self-proclaimed Kentucky posters should serve as a HUGE warning to the candidates to ask tons of questions.
Frankly, I think this blog is providing even more (and better) information than was originally intended.
I think candidates should always ask tons of questions when a department has recently turned someone in their field down for tenure. I guess it comes down to how impressive or unimpressive they think the rejected person's record was.
Someone seems to have an axe to grind.
Do we know what's happening at Clemson and Auburn yet? I heard they made offers in American Politics. Do they plan to fill their other jobs too? Is it true that Morey and Bodea are interviewing at Kentucky next week? Or has Morey taken the GSU job? Anyone know the interview list at VTech?
Clemson made an offer in IR. No idea who the lucky contestant was.
I am a Kentucky faculty member and I started reading this blog closely a few weeks ago because I heard that there was a lot of incorrect information being posted about our searches. Most of what I have read has been false, but (aside from my Feb 4 10 AM post) I do not feel at liberty to correct anything. It would require exposing information that should be treated as confidential by common standards of professionalism. I guess I would ask the blog's readers to please judge us not by rumors someone is generating but instead by the good research judgment we've shown by bringing in widely sought, high-quality candidates.
My message should said Feb 24 10 AM post.
In response to the person who asked about the position at Clemson, reportedly not only was an offer made but it was supposedly accepted according to the post at 7:36 PM, February 21, 2006. No idea as to the accuracy of this information or who might have taken the offer.
Regarding the 2:25 PM post above: I know Bodea interviewed at Kentucky in the fall. She must have turned them down without another offer because she recently accepted at MSU according to a post above. I have no idea on Morey.
The salary data from Oklahoma State is a pay service but they are often gracious enough to share some relevant data with you if you explain specific needs and information you are seeking (they did this for me in 2004/05).
Heard third hand, Morey accepted GSU offer.
If 12:57pm 2/27 post is accurate, it's a good move for Morey -- Georgia State seems like a very strong up-and-coming department, lots of good things happening there. Kudos to both!
I heard third hand that Morey accepted the Virginia Tech job after only a phone interview.
Regarding the 7:30 PM February 26 post above: Kentucky interviewed six but, depending on which claim you believe, made offers to three or four people. I don't see how anything "must" have happened with regard to one visitor. It's probably not safe to assume something.
So did Kentucky give Bodea a 3 month turnaround on their offer to her because the timing just doesn't make sense. Please enlighten.
how about a rule of thumb? don't post anything you've heard "third hand."
Heard from a source at Georgetown that they hired Bruce Hoffman (RAND) for their senior security-studies search. I also got a rejection letter for their temporary (3-year) junior position, but the letter did not say who was hired for that.
My department seems like a strong up-and-coming department too. Oh, and did I mention that I'm a strong, up-and-coming scholar. Darn, forgot, I'm supposed to indicate what I'm praising and NOT indicate my motives.
To my knowledge, Virginia Tech has not hired yet - I would be very surprised if they had, since my interview is not for a few weeks. All this "hearing third hand" seems like a bunch of crap.
If you are an up-and-coming scholar, wouldn't you have something better to do than post inane comments to this rumor mill? Wouldn't you have something better to do than spend all the time it takes to read it? Oh, wait, that's not what I meant. IRONY ALERT!
Regarding my "strong/up-and-coming" post (1:11, 2/27): I seem to have forgotten that apart from third-hand rumors, one can only post items that are suspicious, malign, bitter, or envious. Please accept my humble apologies for such a naive and clumsy attempt to offer a sincere compliment.
for Georgetown's security studies, I also heard that Hoffman got the Senior slot and I heard from someone at the school that they are trying to fill the three year Visiting (not junior) position with Paul Pillar
has anyone heard if Seton Hall has filled their "Global Terrorism" position"?
In response to the question about Seton Hall, I believe they are still conducting on-campus interviews.
I got a rejection letter today from George Washington...it told me who filled the position (Schmidt), what their credentials were (Columbia), and how many people applied for the slot (140+). Very classy. Props to GW for a good letter, despite the bad news therein. (Some of the letters I received were literally 2 lines long; most departments I applied to sent no letter at all.)
Just so the correct information is out there... Kentucky sent two offers out late last week. Both are in IR.

What happened at UMICH IR?
GSU starting salary in poli sci is no where near 57K. The business and law schools inflate the average reported on the Chronicle's homepage.
RE: UMICH IR.
They interviewed two candidates. Kurizaki is off the market and Trager is not yet. Make a good guess.
Kentucky hasn't made any offers yet to the latest set of candidates. This blog has deteriorated into a complete joke, but I suspect most people recognize this by now.
I agree that most people are skeptical of any UK rumor at this point, but why do some people think some rumors are "obviously" (6:40PM, 2/22/06) false? One anonymous, sourceless post is followed by another...how is anyone to tell the difference? There are easy ways to solve this problem:
-Describe your source!
-Identify yourself! (if only generally)
-Dispute specific rumors instead of just saying "I won't bother to rebut all the garbage in here" (10:02 AM, 2/24/06).
If the people trying to quell false rumors can't do these simple things, they will continue to have misinformed colleagues.
I find it so odd that Kentucky seems to attract a disproportionate share of inaccurate rumors and controversy. Any clues on why this is the case?
my guess is that there is massive in-fighting in kentucky's department over who to hire and in what field. the department is notorious for methodological conflict.
Any news on University of Oakland?
Any news about the interviews involving Reiter, Tarar (and maybe others) at U. of Chicago? Was an offer made?
I have no idea why someone would choose to post that Kentucky has made two offers when it's a total fabrication. But you can't blame internal confusion caused by "in-fighting" for that sort of misinformation when the decision was scheduled for a faculty meeting that hadn't happened yet.
RE: Dispute specific rumors instead of just saying "I won't bother to rebut all the garbage in here"
The implication is that, to quell rumors generated irresponsibly on this blog, departments now have the responsibility to give you all the internal details about their searches. They do not. The job hunt is hard enough without having to face the knowledge that, when I strike out, it will be broadcast all over creation accompanied by ill-informed "guesses" about what was going on behind the scenes. These negotiations are simply none of your business. I'd prefer to lick my wounds in private.
RE: "I find it so odd that Kentucky seems to attract a disproportionate share of inaccurate rumors and controversy. Any clues on why this is the case?"
It only takes one person.
I called a friend at Kentucky to talk about the stuff that's been appearing on the blog. I can't go into the confidential things about who's posting the false rumors and why, but he did tell me something that will be good news for those of us still looking. Apparently their Dean is really into IR. He started an International Studies program at his last institution and has proposed the same thing there. Never trust budgets at public universities, but it's possible Kentucky will be hiring a bunch in IR soon. At the rate things are going, I know I will still be available next year!
Please educate me. Why so much attention to GSU and Kentucky?
RE: "I can't go into the confidential things about who's posting the false rumors and why"
Ummm... if it's confidential, why was it shared with you?
anyone from the west coast out there? care about jobs in the cal state system, colorado, or nevada?
RE:Any news on University of Oakland?
Dong-hun Kim (Iowa) accepted the position.
While I am flattered with all of the attention, Dan Morey has NOT accepted any offers at this point.
Varying degrees of confidential. What someone is willing to say on the phone to a former grad student mate isn't necessarily appropriate for the Internet. I'm just happy to hear that a Research I department might be ramping up its IR coverage soon.
Any rumor about Lafayette college?
Any news on Northern Illinois?
Any news on SUNY-Buffalo?
Any news on Fellowships? Princeton CGG, Duke, and UCLA?
Princeton CGG has made offers.
Nuffield Prize Fellowships have already been offered.
Heard that Koremenos is being put up for tenure at UCLA? Is this right? Didn't she just move to Michigan?
she apparently has a love interest at UCLA...
About Kentucky... A good friend of mine left that department a couple of years ago, and I just have to take issue with the statement that their dean is "really into IR." I realize that it's a crazy post, obviously from the school, but seriously, how can a dean let 2 prominent senior IR scholars leave for other schools (without even trying to counter) and then force another prominent senior scholar to leave the college and still be "really into IR?" That's the same dean that tried to remove IR from the department a couple of years ago, right?
These Kentucky posts are crazy on both sides, so could we just have one more response from Kentucky and then NO MORE??!!!!
I agree with the March 1, 8:34pm post. Let's stop the chatter about Kentucky and get back to giving updates on actual positions -- ie who has interviews where and who gets offers.
Duke has made an offer, which the candidate is likely to accept.
Any word on cal state system jobs?
Wasn't Colgate advertising some IR position a few months back? Did they appoint?
Duke? An offer? What kind of position?
Kentucky off the bubble? The win over the Vols was huge. Now if only they can build on that success with a strong showing in the SEC tourney and the IR job market.
Perhaps they should just emulate Tennessee and fire a rising star to hire away from somewhere like UW-Milwaukee. Worked out for the Vols...
Can someone explain the last post? Who was at Tennessee and was fired? Who did Tennessee then hire?
Iowa State's CP/IR position has closed for the year (per rejection letter), though I hear they'll be trying again next year.
is this the Iowa St. pol econ or the social movement position?
IL-Springfield has invited 4 candidates to campus (heard this 3rd hand).
Duke's post-doc (re: above)
virginia tech has invited candidates out
UMass has made offers to junior and senior candidates
who did Baylor hire for the open rank position????
*IF* it is public information, who got (and accepted?) the Duke postdoc?
"Can someone explain the last post? Who was at Tennessee and was fired? Who did Tennessee then hire?"
Tennessee fired Buzz Peterson last year after only 3 years. Some people were surprised by the decision at the time. But then they hired away Bruce Pearl from UW-Milwaukee, and he has done a great job so far (but, then again, so did Mike Davis his first year at Indiana).
The closed Iowa State search is the social movements job. They hired in political economy.
Baylor hired someone from Tulane. (according to a rejection letter)
Any more confirmation on the V-Tech position?
On V-tech, see Feb 27 6:55 post. That's accurate, I've heard.
(third-hand) Santa Cruz has made an offer to a senior candidate, which has not yet been accepted. They made a visiting position offer to a junior candidate, who was unable to accept it.
Baylor hired David Clinton
Someone was asking about U Wisconsin-Platteville. I think they have a short list as they are in the process of setting up phone interviews.
Rumor has it that Slantchev is leaving UCSD. Is this just a rumor or is there any truth to it? And is Gleditsch staying at Essex? What is going on in that department?
Can't speak to the facts, but "what is going on" is likely that they hire *very* good people who get lots of interest from other places.
What's the latest on the Kentucky job(s)? Given that some of the UK faculty are apparently reading these (and perhaps even altering behavior BASED on these), can anyone in the know give us all an update?
One of my graduate students interviewed in the latest round for the Kentucky job. Word I received was that their dean and the department disagreed on 1 or 2 candidates, and they are unsure of what to do next (as of Friday).
I'm in the department at UK and I don't think the last post is true at all (about the disagreement over 1-2 candidates). Things are moving forward.
More Kentucky stuff? Pleaaaaaaaase, give us a break. Let's talk about important and interesting stuff!
"and perhaps even altering behavior BASED on these"
That has got to be the stupidest statement I have ever read.
"...Slantchev is leaving UCSD"
Where to?
Is it NYU that Slantchev is going to?
The one-week delay at Kentucky resulted because all three candidates were superb and we would have preferred to make offers to all of them. The department ultimately cannot hire three people this year, though, so two offers will go out shortly. I expect that the erroneous 5:00 AM March 05 post came from our stalker and not from one of the professionals who mentored our three excellent candidates.
I agree - please stop posting about Kentucky. It's probably not more than three people who care about that. Kentucky-obsessed people (insiders and outsiders, should there be any) should start their own blog elsewhere.
"Three" may be on the generous side...
I know Slantchev was looking around, but did he actually get an offer anywhere?
Secondhand: Slantchev was not looking around *voluntarily* but was approached by several places and was asked to apply.
It's conceivable that he gets very attractive offers, and he deserve that. He is phenomenal.
That still doesn't answer the question. Where are all these departments that are (according to you, at least) falling over themselves to make Slantchev offers? That's my question--not whether he "deserves" them or not.
Re: the posting about Koremenos's situation (5:39 pm, March 1). It is completely inappropriate to post this kind of information. I don't think this blog should be used for making speculation or publicly revealing information about people's personal lives.
Re: Slantchev
I don't know the details, but he is considering an offer although afaik he's not decided whether to leave UCSD yet.
