Pretty much what it sounds like: a place for discussions of the 2009-2010 market, strategies for getting a job, strategies for coping with the process, etc. etc.

Loose Ends and Pre-Season Thoughts
But we also remember what happened when we made a plea for our readers to help us with such a task last year: almost no one stepped forward to help out.
Please don't make that the case again this year. We're counting on you.
Here's the plan: we've created a duplicate of the Big Board with a clean comments section. Please help us complete the board by leaving information there.
Now, on to other matters.
The major development on the rumor mill front in 2007-2008 was the advent of the wiki. At the time, we asked for opinions about whether we should shutter the mill. The overwhelming consensus was "no," and we must say that you were right. This year not only did the wiki prove problematic, but a significant number of its rumors came from us.
The major development this year has been the advent of Political Science Job Rumors. A rather lively place, in our opinion. And we find ourselves wondering yet again: has the Rumor Mill lost its raison d'ĂȘtre? Should we continue?
To be honest, running the thing during job season is kind of a pain. A big reason is that we make sporadic efforts to contact faculty and job candidates about rumors we receive (we didn't do this as frequently as we should have in 2008-2009, and if we continue we'll aim to ramp up the effort). On the other hand, we think we're a somewhat cleaner, friendlier place than the message boards, and that probably counts for something. What do you think?
Finally, if we do continue, what can we do better? What should we change? And no, we won't ditch moderation.

2008-2009 Job Rumors (September)
1. all comments are moderated; Also, remember that we sometimes inadvertently violate our own policies, that we appreciate emailed rumors, that we will always keep our sources confidential, and that threatening to sue us only makes us mad.
2. we seek confirmation before posting rumors concerning lateral moves;
3. source your rumors, e.g., "I overheard someone in the hall saying that his friend heard from another fellow at Belfer that her friend at Big State University knows the administrative assistant at Small Liberal Arts College who said that they were interviewing...." or, more likely, "source: the candidate";
4. keep it clean.
At the risk of repetition, we note that no one has a "legal right" to keep information about his or her interview a secret. If you're tempted to claim otherwise, consider a simple fact: if we find out about your interview, it usually means it already isn't much of a secret.
We often try to accommodate reasonable requests to hold information. We believe, moreover, that our attempts to operate in good faith account for the high-quality information we receive. We are very good about honoring requests to hold rumors by people who send us those rumors.
But do not assume that our team is made up entirely of powerless first-year graduate students (although it might be... we're not saying) and that making absurd threats against us won't engender blowback. We know some people who are very good with voodoo dolls.

Winter Comments Thread
Our moderator extends a sincere apology to the community. Something isn't working quite right, apparently, in the interaction between our moderator's own account and the email forwarding system for gmail. The upshot: our moderator wasn't aware of a backlog of posts accumulating, and has only recently let a slew of comments through from the last few days.
Also, if anyone is interested in compiling a visiting fellowship list and sending it along, we'd be happy to create a tally board for it.

Unconfirmed Rumors: IR Jobs (New)
We've had to delete a large number of posts lately. We understand that it can be difficult to resist gossiping about candidates, particularly senior-level candidates, and departments, but we don't consider that appropriate activity for the IR Rumor Mill. We apologize to those who made reasoned arguments about the inappropriateness of the questions and discussions, but we deleted your posts to make it less likely for the conversation to continue. We may put up some of these comments in the IR Rumor Mill Discussion thread [note: as we have been doing as long as those comments are informational rather than speculative or dispariging].
We'll be a bit more tolerant of some of this kind of posting in the Job-market discussion thread, but even there we want to make sure the conversation "stays clean."
If you can't resist, there are plenty of outlets for this sort of nonsense (which, we believe, reflects very badly on our field): IR Discussions, American and Comparative Jobs 2, and so forth.
Feel free to discuss this policy in the IR Rumor Mill Discussion thread. But we won't change our minds.
We are, of course, interested in confirmation of the accuracy of the information we've posted in the tally sheet. The information we have is, at the least, incomplete.
We have reason to believe that some departments have responded to the various rumor mills by trying to better police information about their candidates and searches. We understand the rationale for such policies, but want to reiterate our stance: transparency -- within limits -- is in the best interests of the community. Interview information is already shared between faculty members and fellows at many institutions, and so the only people left in the dark are candidates (and prospective candidates) who lack access to these "information networks."

• Our ability to assess rumors in the absence of documentation -- e.g., forwarded departmental emails, information from members of commmittees, or websites with lists of candidates -- is fairly limited. Such information will causes us to rate a rumor as "confirmed." Second-hand collaboration we consider to be reliable will be coded as "likely." Evidence based on commentators who vouch for the basis of their rumors will be treated as "possible." All other information will be designated as "unconfirmed." • The "Accuracy of Information" heading doesn't distinguish between the status of the search in question and the names of candidates. In the absence of named candidates, this assessment refers to the status of the search. In the presence of named candidates, it refers to the candidate list. • If a name appears in the "denouement" column, then this information refers to a confirmed hire. We do not post the names of candidates who have "merely" received offers. • Individuals may, at their discretion, contact us directly via email -- ir rumor mill at gmail dot com -- with rumors, denials, or confirmations of information. IR Job Rumors Fall 2006 (April-May 2006 Comments)
*new* [2006-03-30] Participants are reminded that the unit of analysis here is the job (or the job-year), and not the individual job-seeker or department. Please do not post rumors regarding how and why individual candidates or departments have made decisions, especially containing personal information; if you wish to discuss these matters, the IR Discussions blog may be a better place.
[2006-03-06] Please restrict postings here to information on interviews, offers, and acceptances (or queries for information) from public sources of information. (i.e., you should ask before posting something you heard over beer from someone at ISA). For general discussions of the job market, including salaries, please use the IR Job Market Discussion post. For discussions as to the merits (or lack thereof) of this blog, please use the IR Rumor Mill Discussion thread.
[2006-02-06] To prevent too many comments from building up, periodically a new post that summarizes all the comments will be placed at the top of the blog; to view old comments, see the posts from [October 16-November 17], [November 18-December 17], [December 18-February 06], [February 07-March 05], and [March 06-April 02], which contain old comments.
[2006-01-28] Additional rumor mills have been independently started, for American and Comparative Politics as well as Political Theory and Public Law. Cross-posting of CP information is probably a good idea, since a significant fraction of CP and IR jobs overlap (unlike CP and AP or IR and AP).
[2005-12-03] An increasing number of Comparative Politics posts are being made. While only posts that refer to jobs in the IR Job List Fall 2006 will be added to the master table below, contributors should feel free to post information about CP jobs, since there is substantial overlap.
[2005-11-20] To prevent comments being lost, please post all rumors here rather than on the individual rumor postings. Comments have been turned off on these postings.
Please include some information on the source of your knowledge that will allow others to evaluate your information. Are you a member of the department interviewing? A friend or colleague of a candidate? Please be as specific in your information and sources as possible (while maintaining anonymity if you wish).
Want to see a list of jobs?
See the IR
Job List Fall 2006 entry.
Note: The Institution links will take you to the original job posting; the Rumors link will take you to the rumor posting. If there is a link but no date in the Rumors column, no substantive information (e.g., a list of interviewees) has been received; dates are updated when new rumors appear. The table is sorted from most recent to oldest rumor.
[C] appears next to dates when additional posts appear to
confirm an initial rumor of interviews. If you have independent
confirmation of interviews being conducted at a university that does
not have a [C] or a list of candidates, please
post a comment. A [?] appears if information disputing a rumor has
occurred.
